Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, 20, beat Serbian Novak Djokovic, 36, by 3 sets to 2 in the Wimbledon final this Sunday afternoon (16). The splits were 1-6, 7-6, 6-1, 3-6 and 6-4. It was his second Grand Slam title – he also won the US Open last year.

It was a dispute between the top two in the ATP rankings — Alcaraz came in first and Djokovic in second. As a result, the positions are maintained.

The match was hotly contested and lasted over four hours. Both players alternated between good and bad moments during the game and starred in long points, resolved after many exchanges of the ball. Djokovic, who had only had his serve broken three times throughout the entire tournament, saw Alcaraz break it four times on Sunday alone.

The Serbian, owner of 23 Grand Slams titles – the biggest winner in the history of men’s tennis – started overwhelming and won the first set by 6 to 1, in just 34 minutes.

In the following set, however, Alcaraz met again and the dispute was well balanced, with both players breaking the opponent’s service. In the end, the Spaniard won in the tie-break (8 to 6).

The fifth game of the third set was an event in itself. The service was from the Serb, who was at a disadvantage (the score showed 3-1 for Alcaraz) and the dispute for that game alone lasted 26 minutes and 57 seconds. Alcaraz won and the long dispute affected Djokovic, who also lost the next two games. In the end, the Spaniard returned the 6 to 1 of the first set.

But the Serb came back in the fourth set. He broke the Spaniard’s service twice and won by 6 to 3. The set point, incidentally, was a double fault by the Spaniard. The concussion had switched sides.

In the final set, Alcaraz broke Djokovic’s set early on and managed to maintain the advantage to become champion. Djokovic fought hard but was unable to return the break.

It was the third time they faced each other, and the score was 1-1 — Alcaraz won in Miami, in 2022, and Djokovic gave the change in this year’s Roland Garros semifinal.

If he had won this Sunday’s dispute, Djokovic would be equal to the Australian Margaret Court, the biggest winner of Grand Slams (feminine and male counting), with 24 victories. She played between the 1960s and the 1970s
