Federal deputy Carla Zambelli (PL-SP) stated this Thursday (16) that she officiated at Colégio Santa Cruz, in São Paulo, to cancel the presentation of the theater play “Catarina and the Beauty of Matar Fascistas”. The presentation is scheduled for this Friday (17th) and will be made by high school students from the institution. According to Zambelli, “the show directly links right-wing voters to the fascist political movement.”

“We request the General Director of Colégio Santa Cruz de São Paulo to cancel the presentation of the play ‘Catarina and the Beauty of Killing Fascists’, scheduled for 11/17, as the show directly links right-wing voters to the political movement fascist”, said the parliamentarian on social media.

The event, publicized by the school on social media, tells the story of a family that has a tradition of killing “fascists” and sees, in 2028, the “extreme right” win the elections. The play is based on the text by Portuguese playwright Tiago Rodrigues. “The text encourages students’ critical thinking about the importance of non-violence in defending democracy”, said the school about the work.

“Is there a place for violence in the fight for a better world? Does democracy have its own tools to defend itself? We are in the year 2028. The play proposes a dystopia in which the far right won the elections. From this fact, we follow the trajectory of a family that, for generations, has been killing fascists”, says an excerpt from the play’s synopsis.

“In an ancient tradition, the family meets in a house in the countryside, an old and remote rural property. One of the young women in the family, Catarina, is going to kill her first fascist, kidnapped for that purpose. It is a day of celebration, beauty and death. However, Catarina is unable to kill or refuses to do so, breaking tradition. Family conflict breaks out, accompanied by several ethical questions”, concludes the institution’s post about the show’s synopsis.

A People’s Gazette asked Colégio Santa Cruz about Zambelli’s request, but until the publication of this article the institution did not respond. The space remains open for demonstrations.
