Wrexham in celebration: Deadpool rises to the 5th English division – 04/24/2023 – Sandro Macedo

With just over 60,000 inhabitants (all of which fits inside a Maracanã stadium), tiny Wrexham, in Wales, is celebrating. After 15 years embittering England’s National League, the city team, Wrexham, finally got access over the weekend and will compete in League 2 (the fourth division) next season.

Unknown until the other day to most mortal ballers, Wrexham has become the darling of many people in the four corners of the world. All because of the documentary series “Welcome to Wrexham”, which shows how two Hollywood actors who barely understand football become owners of the team.

The two actors, in this case, are: Ryan Reynolds, the charismatic Canadian famous for his work on “Deadpool”, Marvel’s foul-mouthed hero —he also made “Green Lantern”, but no one needs to remember that–; and Rob McElhenney, who was the one who convinced Reynolds and whose main work is the long-running sitcom “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”.

“Welcome to Wrexham”, available on Star+ streaming, shows the struggles of Ryan’s first year and the other guy (nobody knows Rob or remembers his last name, which yields several jokes) as the new owners of the bankrupt and traditional Welsh team, which was founded in 1864 and plays at the Racecourse Ground, one of the oldest stadiums in the world still in operation.

As the series is about the 2022 season, here comes the spoiler: they don’t get access in the first year under new ownership. But, even knowing the end, the program is delicious and goes beyond the backstage of the locker room. It’s more like “Sunderland until I Die”, with the involvement of fans, than “All or Nothing” for regulars, a series that has highlighted seasons of several teams.

Most of the 16 episodes are no longer than 30 minutes and have a didactic (and fun) air to win over even those who are not used to Breton sport —he explains, for example, that a victory in football is worth three points and also plays with some traditions welsh. It’s almost a “Ted Lasso” in documentary format, with Lasso being the owner, not the technician, and having two of them.

The episodes also show how hard it is to be a professional after years of amateurism. They spend money (more than once) to fix the pitch —something that the Maracanã administration has not been able to do so far—and hire players and a coach worthy of a third division to compete in the fifth.

Future spoiler: The second season of the series, which will be released sometime this year, will end with a happy ending. Last Saturday, in the presence of Ryan and Rob, the Red Dragons beat intrepid Boreham Wood 3-1 to take 110 points (there are 24 teams) and secure the National League title with a game to spare.

The owners’ objective is as daring as that of a Hollywood production. They want to take the team to the first division, the moneyed Premier League.

The dream may seem distant, but Wrexham will include a tour of the United States in the next pre-season with friendly matches against Chelsea and Manchester United. It will be the great classic Red Dragons x Red Devils. We still don’t know if anyone recorded a video in the changing room singing “Manchester can wait, your time will come”.

Round 38 – 15 left

When two coaches were fired after the first round in 2022, this innocent scribe thought it was insanity. But we are in Brazilian lands, where football insanity is just another Sunday afternoon.

Thus, three professors were beheaded after round 1: two Brazilians (Rogério Ceni, from São Paulo, and Fernando Lázaro, from Corinthians) and a foreigner (Portuguese António Oliveira, from Coritiba).

As the tournament started with 18 (Flamengo and Goiás didn’t want to play with the coach in the debut), there are 15 survivors left —Foreigners 8 x 7 Brasucas.
