Lionel Scaloni confirmed that he will continue as coach of the Argentine national team, after putting his future at the current world champions in doubt in November.
At 45 years old, Scaloni said he was thinking about leaving his position after Argentina beat Brazil 1-0 in the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
“It’s difficult to move forward and it’s difficult to keep winning,” said at the time.
Argentine press reports said earlier this month that Scaloni he had reached an agreement with the Argentine Federation to continue in his position at least until the end of the next Copa América, in the middle of the year.
“There was a lot of discussion, but I always told the truth. There were moments to think and know what to do. It wasn’t a goodbye or anything like that.”he said Scaloni, in an interview with an Italian TV channel. “I was thinking about how the selection would continue and at the moment to also give space to young people, and that is important for us. It was a moment of reflection.”
Scaloni took over as coach of Argentina in 2018 and led the team to the Copa América title in 2021 and the third World Cup title in 2022.
