Forward Megan Rapinoe, one of the stars of the US national soccer team, announced on Saturday that she will retire from the sport at the end of this year.
“I was able to have an incredible career, and this sport has taken me all over the world and allowed me to meet many incredible people,” said the Seattle Reign player, in a statement released by the United States Soccer Federation.
“I feel incredibly grateful to have played as hard as I did, to have been as successful as I have been, to have been part of a generation that undoubtedly left this sport better than they found it,” added Rapinoe.
Two-time world champion with the US national team, in 2015 and 2019; and gold medalist at the London Olympics in 2012; Rapinoe will compete in the next edition of the Cup, this year, and then leave the national team and OL Reign, the team she defends.
Rapinoe, who turned 38 last Wednesday, in addition to being a reference as a player, is also a symbol in the USA due to her engagement in the fight for the rights of the LGBT community. The attacker also stood out for her activism for equal pay between men and women in American sports.
Last year, the attacker received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor existing in the United States.
