The Senate’s female bench asked for a vote of repudiation against the former governor of Ceará Ciro Gomes and said that his speech about senator Janaína Farias (PT-CE), substitute for minister Camilo Santana (Education), was sexist, prejudiced and violent.

“These attacks are disgusting and absolutely unacceptable, reflecting a personal stance of devaluing women and a worrying resistance to female participation in spaces of power and decision-making”, says an excerpt from the document released this Monday (8).

“Demonstrations like this, having a strong nature of misogyny and prejudice, cannot and will not be tolerated, as they undermine the social advances for which many have fought and continue to fight tirelessly.”

During an interview with the portal A Notícia do Ceará on Thursday (4), Gomes stated that senator Janaína Farias performs “private service” as a “harem” for the minister and compared him to the Roman emperor Calígula, to whom the story of having sworn in a horse as senator.

“That guy [Calígula] he was so powerful, so without contrast, as unfortunately it seems that Camilo is seeing himself, that to humiliate the Senate he named his own horse a senator. Barely comparing —it’s not a horse, we’re talking about a person, therefore—, I ask, with all due respect: what is the work, the achievement, the preparation, that Janaína has to be senator of the Republic?”, stated Ciro.

“She only did Camilo’s private service, and private service, like the harem, the eunuchs, the girls from around the area. She was always in charge of that service.”

Janaína Farias was sworn into the Senate last week, replacing Augusta Brito (PT-CE), who was on leave to act as Secretary of Political Articulation in the Government of Ceará. Janaína is the second substitute for the Minister of Education in the Senate.
