After being diagnosed with a herniated lumbar disc, actress Taís Araújo underwent the procedure and was discharged this Wednesday (10). She will be left out of the first three episodes of Globo’s ‘The Masked Singer Brasil 4’, scheduled to premiere on the 21st, with a presentation by Ivete Sangalo. Globo says she will resume recording next week.

Herniated disc, a disease that affects a specific region of the spine, called the intervertebral disc, was the main cause, followed by lower back pain, of absences from work for health reasons in 2023, according to the Ministry of Social Security. Last year, more than 2.5 million Brazilians were removed from work due to some type of illness.

According to experts, herniated discs affect the younger population, especially those of working age, from 20 to 40 years old. The symptoms are quite limiting and restrictive, effectively preventing daily activities from being carried out, and the two most important factors associated with spinal injuries are a sedentary lifestyle and poor posture.

Sciatica pain is the most striking symptom — it radiates to the leg and is associated with loss of sensitivity, muscle strength, sensations of shocks and tingling in the limbs.

The best way to prevent hernia is to avoid high levels of stress with a healthy routine, both from a mental and physical point of view, maintaining an adequate posture in the work environment, in domestic activities (which put a lot of strain on the spine), good ergonomics in the office and especially regular physical activity also serve as prevention and treatment of chronic low back pain.

Its diagnosis is made through a well-performed physical examination and imaging tests consistent with the injury. “Often, people read the report of an examination that indicates a ‘hernia’ and, even without having a clinical history and a physical examination consistent with the diagnosis, they believe they have the disease. A mistaken diagnosis will invariably lead to the wrong treatment” , explains Renato Ueta, orthopedist and member of the Spine Group of the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology at Escola Paulista de Medicina – Unifesp.

Surgery will not always be necessary to treat a herniated disc. Sometimes, medications, physical rehabilitation (physiotherapists, physical educators) and analgesic methods, such as acupuncture, can greatly help with treatment.
