Wilson Lima highlights Free Trade Zone and BR-319 in meeting with the Federal Government

The governor also expressed the presidency’s concern for the indigenous people living in the state

Brasilia DF) – Governor Wilson Lima stated that the Federal Government signaled a path for dialogue during a meeting with the 27 governors of the states and the Federal District and the Presidency of the Republic, held this Friday (27) in Brasília. The state representative highlighted the importance of the Planalto guaranteeing the competitiveness of the Manaus Free Trade Zone, in addition to pointing out issues related to the BR-319 highway.

“And then I am very concerned about the discussions of our industrial center in the context of tax reform. Therefore, Amazonas and the other states must be included. With regard to the IPI, it is the main tax that makes up this basket of incentives for companies located in Amazonas. So, we cannot do without this tax. Therefore, if it ends with IPI, it will be the end of ZF”,

said the governor on public statements by ministers of the Lula government, who mention a possible extinction of the Tax on Imported Products (IPI).

“With the statement, for example, that there was a possibility of ending the IPI, I already had a reduction in the revenue from calculating taxes, because this reduces investments, makes the industry reduce its production. So, it is important that we put these agendas in the discussion, since they are a priority for these regions”, added the governor.

In addition to the Free Trade Zone, which accounts for 70% of the economic activity in Amazonas, with the creation of more than 114,000 jobs and which has contributed to keeping 98% of the forest cover in the state intact, Wilson Lima highlighted the paving of the section of the middle of the BR-319, between kilometers 198 and 250, as an important point of discussion. The third priority listed, according to the governor, is the fight against deforestation and other environmental crimes in the south of the state, safeguarding the economic activities carried out within the legal framework.

On the occasion, the governor also expressed the Federal Government’s concern with the indigenous issue in Amazonas, a topic that should be the subject of a next meeting.

“I had a conversation with President Lula and he also expressed his concern about the indigenous issue in the state, taking into account that Amazonas has the largest indigenous population in the country. So, it was scheduled for another opportunity, which we will deal specifically with the indigenous issue in the Amazon and understand, in a very pragmatic way, what will be the role of the federal government and also the role of the state government in these issues”,

explained Wilson Lima to the press after the meeting.

Wilson Lima pointed out that the Government of Amazonas is concerned with strengthening the execution of public policies for the indigenous population of the state, following the example of the work already carried out by the State Foundation for the Indigenous People (FEI), which has a direct channel with these peoples, mainly in the areas of health, education – with the opening of indigenous schools – sanitation and infrastructure of branches, with public lighting, which provide access to areas where indigenous populations reside.

He also informed that the main and common agenda for the governors concerns tax recomposition to avoid revenue losses in the states. According to him, Amazonas alone had a loss of BRL 1 billion and the states of the Amazon had approximately BRL 5 billion.

At the meeting, President Lula highlighted that the meeting with the governors aimed to return Brazil to normality in the sense of dialogue and respect between the powers and reinforced that the doors of the Federal Government will be open to municipal and state public managers to discuss and evaluate priority projects of interest to the states.
