Wilson Lima and governors sign letter committing to protect the Amazon

Event held at the Vasco Vasques Convention Center promoted discussions on the preservation of the Amazon region and the local population as protagonists

Manaus (AM) – Governor Wilson Lima and other governors of states in the Legal Amazon signed, this Friday (10), the “Manaus Charter”, during the General Assembly of the 26th Forum of Governors of the Legal Amazon, with integrated commitments from states to combat deforestation and fires in the region. The document will be presented during COP-28, the largest global meeting on climate change, which will take place between November 30th and December 12th in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates.

In the presence of Minister Flávio Dino (Justice and Public Security) and the president of the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), Aloísio Mercadante, Governor Wilson Lima highlighted one of Amazonas’ actions to reduce fire outbreaks: the implementation plan of the Integrated Fire Fighting and Civil Protection Group (GCIP), which will be implemented in 21 municipalities that represent 92% of the records of hot spots in the state.

The project has resources of R$35 million, approved by the Amazon Fund, which is subject to analysis by the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), on which occasion Governor Wilson Lima thanked Mercadante for his commitment to speeding up the analysis. The amount will be added to the R$ 23.7 that will be allocated by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security. Completion is scheduled for mid-2024.

Still at the Forum, the Letter of Eligibility of the BNDES Credit and Operations Committee was also signed, to support the Amas Program (Amazonia, Security and Sovereignty) with the release of R$ 318 million, part of the total investment that will exceed R$ 2 billion. The objective is to strengthen the presence of security forces in the Amazon region.

The event held at the Vasco Vasques Convention Center, in the center-south area of ​​Manaus, promoted discussions about the preservation of the Amazon region and the local population as protagonists. For Wilson Lima, the event is an opportunity for managers to discuss economic development and enhance opportunities for those who live in the region.

“They (the governors) arrive here in the state of Amazonas at a time when we are facing a complicated situation of extreme drought, people in the state of Amazonas who need humanitarian aid, both food and water, face difficulties due to rivers in economic activity. There is the issue of deforestation and fires. So this is an important moment for us to discuss solutions and understand those points that are convergent”,

highlighted Governor Wilson Lima, host of the event in the capital.

Participating in the meeting, in addition to Wilson Lima and Helder Barbalho, were governors Gladson Cameli (Acre); Clécio Vieira (Amapá); Antônio Denarium (Roraima); Wanderlei Castro (Tocantins); vice-governors Otaviano Pivetta (Mato Grosso) and Sérgio Gonçalves (Rondônia); in addition to the Secretary of Environment Pedro Chagas, representing Maranhão.

“This event today preceded an important moment of our delegation going to COP-28 in Dubai, where the Consortium of Governors will be present as it has done in previous years and arrives with the subsidies from the Sectoral Chambers, the debates that were held by each secretary of their respective subjects of all states”,

summarized Governor Helder Barbalho (Pará), who also presides over the Interstate Consortium for Sustainable Development of the Legal Amazon.

Diplomatic representations from countries such as Germany, France, Switzerland and the United Kingdom were also at the event; members of the Armed Forces; Amazonas senators Omar Aziz and Eduardo Braga, as well as managers and representatives from other local, national and international institutions.

Minister Flávio Dino also announced the installation of two Amas command centers in Manaus, with the implementation of the International Police Cooperation Center and also the National Force Command Center in the Amazon and highlighted that only with the presence of the State, with actions of public security, it is possible to overcome the fight against environmental and other types of crimes.

The Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, also participated in the event, virtually, thanked the governors for their support in the Tax Reform approved by the Senate and said that the Federal Government is working on an economic transformation plan with sustainable practices.
