The Wiki Loves Earth contest will reward photographs that portray the landscapes, animals and plants present in areas of environmental preservation. The competition takes place in several countries and seeks to bring visibility to the protection of nature. The project is carried out by Wikipedia, with the support of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Registration for the national stage of the contest is free and can be done until August 1st through the Wikimedia Commons platform.
The award is divided into three categories: landscapes, living beings and environmental destruction. To compete, the photos must be taken in environmental conservation units. A list of locations is available on the contest website.
The winning photographer of the national stage will be awarded the opportunity to participate in a photographic expedition to a Brazilian environmental protection area to be defined. The 15 best photos will move on to the international stage, competing with images from another 50 countries.
In the global phase of the competition, the twenty best photographs will be awarded with gift certificates. The bonus can vary from US$ 100 (about R$ 480) to US$ 650 (about R$ 3,120), according to the placements of the participants.
The result of the Brazilian phase will be announced on August 30th. For the international competition, the revelation of the winners is scheduled for the month of November.
The entries submitted to the contest are under a free license and can be used by anyone, not just Wikipedia, without any payment. The use of images must mention the name of the photographer.
More information and guidelines for registration are available on the project’s website.
