A group of opposition parliamentarians will ask the Federal Supreme Court (STF) to declare Minister Luis Roberto Barroso suspected of participating in all cases involving former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and his allies, as announced by the deputy. Carlos Jordy (PL-RJ) in the late morning of this Thursday (13).

In a video posted on social media (see in full)Jordy claims that the magistrate cannot participate in the trials for having demonstrated “that he is a militant”, in relation to the speech given on Wednesday (12) that he fought against “Bolsonarism”, during a speech at the 59th Congress of the National Union of Students (UNE), in Brasilia.

“Barroso will be the next president of the STF, he will be the biggest insult to our democracy. He cannot preside over our Supreme Court, as he has already demonstrated that he is a militant who interferes in politics, unbalancing the democratic game”, said the deputy.

In addition to the request for suspicion, an impeachment action will also be filed in the Senate against the minister, which had already been announced earlier. This should be for next week, according to interlocutors told People’s Gazette.

Jordy explains that Barroso will have to explain who he is referring to when he says that “we defeated Bolsonarism”, as he is part of a collegiate body in the STF. “He wants to refer to the STF or the other side, which he says defeated Bolsonarism”, he questions.

The deputy says that Barroso violated the Impeachment Law itself, which declares “as crimes under the responsibility of STF ministers: item 2, pronounce judgment when, by law, he is a suspect in the cause; 3, carry out party-political activity; and 5, behave in a way that is incompatible with the honor, dignity and decorum of one’s duties”.

“If there is a minimum of dignity in the senators, they will accept this impeachment process. Because there is a clear attempt to destroy our democracy, interference in other powers and interference in elections from a minister who has shown that he has a side,” added the parliamentarian.

Parliamentarians criticize Barroso’s speeches

In addition to Jordy, other opposition deputies criticized Barroso’s speeches during the UNE congress. Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG) stated that “the loss of office is undeniable”, while Bia Kicis (PL-DF) considered the speech to be very serious. “At a partisan political event, he confessed that he acted against a political force,” he said.

Opposition senators also came out in criticism of the magistrate, and recall that there are already a series of requests for hearings and even impeachment filed in the Senate against STF ministers – including Barroso.

Rogério Marinho (PL-RN), leader of the opposition in the Senate, sees that “apparently, the PT had more allies than we imagined”. Luiz Carlos Heinze (PP-RS) says that Barroso’s “confession” made the polarization of the Judiciary even more visible.

STF explains Barroso’s statement: “he referred to the popular vote”

In a note released this Thursday (13), after the repercussion of Barroso’s statement, the STF released a note stating that when the minister said “we defeated Bolsonarism”, he was not referring to “the performance of any institution”, but rather “to the popular vote”. ”.

“As is clearly extracted from the context of Minister Barroso’s speech, the phrase ‘We defeat the dictatorship and Bolsonarism’ referred to the popular vote and not to the performance of any institution”, says the STF note.

In fact, the exact phrase of the minister, during the UNE Congress, in Brasilia, was: “We defeated censorship, we defeated torture, we defeated Bolsonarism, to allow democracy and the free manifestation of all people”. At this time, he did not speak of a “popular vote”.
