Who will denounce Bolsonaro? – 06/05/2023 – Celso Rocha de Barros

With the case of falsifying the vaccine registration, the scandals of Jair Bolsonaro are starting to walk like the scandals of less armored governments. Now it’s to see who will report.

In other governments, things started with a denouncement, by the press or by the authorities. The denouncement generated political consequences, such as CPIs, the fall of ministers, inquiries, award-winning denunciations, mobilizations of public opinion and even requests for impeachment.

Jair’s gang came to power stepping on the ruins of the political system, destroyed by Lava Jato. They learned their lesson: the traditional parties had tolerated too much democracy, too much press freedom, too much investigation, too much institutional autonomy, too much transparency.

Bolsonaristas were determined not to repeat the mistake: they shielded themselves with the military, waged war on the press and the STF, equipped the Public Ministry and the Federal Police, bought Congress with the secret budget. His preferred suspicious relationships were with Arab countries that are just as transparent as North Korea. All this with a touch of genius: the support of Sergio Moro, the public face of Lava Jato.

With this protection, Bolsonaristas managed to prevent complaints from becoming CPIs, PGR actions, impeachment proceedings. Thus, the pastors’ gold at the MEC, the fraud in the purchase of vaccines, the secret budget itself, all soon left the news and went to die in the opinion columns, including this one.

If the same had happened with the monthly allowance, it would have just been a story about postal fraud. If the same had happened in Lava Jato, it would have just been a story about money laundering using gas stations.

Now Jair is no longer president, the January 8 coup went wrong and a lot of people have been passing Bolsonarists to clean up with independence gestures.

The complaint of falsification of vaccination records doesn’t look like it’s going to die in the cradle. On the contrary: it has already begun to unfold. Among the evidence collected by the police is an audio by former major Ailton Barros to Bolsonaro’s aide, Mauro Cid, in which he proposed a coup d’état in December 2022.

If things go back to working as before, we will see a progression of arrests, confiscation of cell phones, new evidence, new accusations, until someone makes a plea bargain. That’s the end of it for Bolsonaro.

For now, the two main candidates for whistleblower are Mauro Cid and former Minister of Justice Anderson Torres. Both must get a long, hard jail, if they continue to protect Bolsonaro.

And the question begins to arise: why would they make such a sacrifice? The blow went wrong. Jair will be ineligible. Will the politicians who intend to succeed him, like Tarcísio de Freitas and Romeu Zema, spend political capital trying to get Anderson Torres or Mauro Cid out of jail? Will the military get involved in this?

It’s always possible, because there are people out there who may have their tails caught in the story of the coup. But potential whistleblowers don’t seem confident.

Bolsonaristas committed crimes in a crude way, in a poorly disguised way, because they were counting on the coup. They said that there would be no rule of law left to investigate them. Last week it became clear that there was more left than they bargained for. We’ll see if it’s enough.
