After the coronation of Charles III, Lula pins the Central Bank

In an interview after participating in the coronation ceremony of Charles III, in London, this Saturday (6), President Lula complained, once again, about the performance of the Brazilian Central Bank. According to Lula, the “BC has autonomy, but it is not untouchable”, and the president of the body, Roberto Campos Neto, would not have “commitment to Brazil”.

“O [Henrique] Meirelles had the responsibility of having a government discussing with him. This citizen does not. He has no commitment to me. Do you have a commitment to Brazil? He does not have. He is committed to the other government, which appointed him. This is important to be clear. And it is committed to those who like high interest rates. Because there is no other explanation”, said the PT president. The speech was a direct response to the decision of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Central Bank, which on Wednesday (3) maintained the basic interest rate at 13.75%.

He even complained about the team of ministers and declared that they should not “keep having ideas”, but only commit themselves to executing the projects defined by the federal government. According to the PT, by the end of May, the government should announce “all the projects we are going to have for investment in infrastructure, education, by the end of the term”.

Lula also complained about the donation announced by the British of 80 million pounds (500 million reais) to the Amazon Fund. “It’s not enough (…) I want them to fulfill their promise of US$ 100 billion dollars for countries to protect their forests, the ones they still have. That’s why I’m going to the COP to demand this, that’s why I defend a new global governance”, insisted the PT.

Regarding the war in Ukraine, the Brazilian compared the peace negotiations to a “crossword puzzle”. “Let’s put the conversations together and see which words will allow people to sit around a table. And for that, people have to stop shooting, ”he said, insisting that Ukraine, invaded by Russia more than a year ago, must also end the armed struggle. The president also recalled that on May 10, special advisor Celso Amorim should travel to Ukraine.
