[ad_1]
The request for impeachment of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), for statements against Israel made during a trip to Ethiopia, already has more than 130 signatures from parliamentarians from different parties in the Chamber, and should be filed this Wednesday ( 21) at the House’s board of directors.
The initiative by deputy Carla Zambelli (PL-SP) mobilizes deputies outraged by the President of the Republic’s stance in comparing Israeli action in the Gaza Strip to the Holocaust in the Second World War.
According to the deputy’s office, the objective is to continue seeking signatures from parliamentarians during the day, to demonstrate support for the initiative, although the request for the president’s removal does not require a minimum number of signatures to be presented.

Request for removal is based on an article that talks about hostility against a foreign nation
Lula’s impeachment request is based on article 5 of Law 1,079, of 1950, “which deals with the crime of an act of hostility against a foreign nation, exposing the Republic to the danger of war, or compromising its neutrality”.
The speech provoked a diplomatic crisis between the governments of Brazil and Israel, with Lula being considered “persona non grata” in that country and the recall of the Brazilian ambassador to the country after a reprimand and demand for retraction.
During his trip to Ethiopia, on Sunday (18), Lula stated that “what is happening in the Gaza Strip with the Palestinian people does not exist at any other historical moment. In fact, it did: when Hitler decided to kill the Jews.”
For Congresswoman Zambelli, the request “is not bravado against Lula, it is not a reprimand, it is an action in defense of National Security”. The deputy says that the situation is so serious that even the terrorist group Hamas publicly thanked the president after speaking about Israel.
Once filed, the impeachment request will depend on the “good will” of the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira, to move forward. The president is the one who decides whether or not to accept this type of request, in a monocratic way, and can simply not speak out, while the matter remains “shelved”. So far, Lira has not commented on Lula’s statements regarding Israel.
