When Lula malfunctions – 07/24/2023 – Dora Kramer

Gaffes are nothing new in the words of Luiz Inácio da Silva, citizen, trade unionist or president. In this condition, however, it is obvious that they attract attention; sometimes condescending, but mostly critical and with good reason.
Africa, which comes from hearing thanks for the services rendered during “the 350 years of slavery”, is an old customer. Twenty years ago, in November 2003, Lula, then in his first year in office, was in Namibia and, alongside President Sam Nujoma, decided to praise the capital, Windhoek.
Very clean and well built, the city surprised Brazilians: “Whoever arrives in Windhoek doesn’t seem to be in an African country”. And he continued: “The view that one has of Africa is that here they are all poor”. And dirty, needless to say to complete the rat.
Imagine the reaction to a foreign ruler who arrived here surprised by the absence of snakes, jaguars, lizards and alligators in the streets of Brasilia.
The list of nonsense authored by President Lula is extensive. It is already configured as a registered trademark, but it is only now that the presidential team sends out the warning signal that a correction is needed in this mode of communication, which is no longer seen with the grace it used to be.
This is what seems to have inspired the idea of announcing a “reinforcement” in the communication area responsible for writing presidential pronouncements.
The measure adopted is good, but it considers the effects and disregards the origin of the defect, which is not in the president’s advice, but in the authorship of the improvisations.
For this reason, transferring responsibility to editors will amount to nothing more than producing a fortuitous veneer of concern over the slips that Lula considers an asset in terms of spontaneity, very useful for popular identification.
When this type of defect occurs, the president becomes more human, but he also approaches his predecessor, whose style was not a good adviser to him.
