The General Coordination of Internal Affairs of the Federal Police denied, last Friday (21), a request by the defense of money changer Alberto Youssef to investigate the wiretaps found in 2014 in the cell where he was detained, in Curitiba, after being arrested during Operation Lava Jato.

In the process that has been going on since April at the 13th Federal Court of the capital of Paraná, the money changer’s defense asked for access to copies of all procedures already open to investigate the case of illegal wiretaps. The request had been accepted by the then judge Eduardo Appio, who is removed from office.

According to police chief Álex Levi Bersan de Rezende, general coordinator of Internal Affairs of the PF, the case has already had “intense scrutiny” and there are no new facts that justify the resumption of the case. He denied that there was inertia in the six disciplinary and two criminal proceedings initiated since 2014.

“It was not possible to identify any new circumstances that would be able to reopen the criminal proceedings that ended or even legitimize the initiation of a new police investigation,” he said in a document obtained by the newspaper. Newspaper.

In addition to the listening in the cell, there was also another investigation opened in 2015 that investigated a bug installed in a light fixture on the second floor staircase of the PF Superintendence building in Curitiba. According to the delegate, it was not possible to prove the participation of some of the investigators, delegates and agents “due to the absence of sufficient elements of authorship”, and of others “the prescription was operated”.

The request of Youssef’s defense to open a new inquiry into the wiretapping could directly affect some of the Lava Jato lawsuits, leading them to questioning and even annulment. However, Rezende says that there are no known elements “which indicate that all investigations and criminal actions have been affected by these and other stains”.

“Operation Lava Jato was not a monolith, it took place for years, generated the outbreak of numerous phases, involved several courts, different members of the MPF, federal police from different police stations, and not only from Curitiba, but also from Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Brasília”, he added in the decision.

The developments on the case will be conducted by Judge Fábio Nunes de Martino, who took office on June 19.
