Wellington Dias presents Brazil’s candidacy to ECLAC – 10/03/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

The Minister of Social Development, Wellington Dias, presented this Tuesday (3) Brazil’s candidacy to preside over and host, in 2025, the conference of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). The entity is currently led by Chile, the host country of this year’s meeting.

When speaking at the Regional Conference on Social Development in Latin America and the Caribbean, the head of the ministry proposed implementing on the continent and in neighboring countries the global alliance against hunger and poverty presented by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) during the summit of G20.

The pact could involve, for example, an agreement between creditors from rich countries and developing states so that debt payments could be reversed into investments in the social, educational, sustainable, health and also infrastructure areas.

“If this alliance against hunger and poverty is possible, it will owe much to the accumulated experience of Latin America and the Caribbean in social development. Our region is a storehouse of good ideas and good experiences in these areas, even with limited resources”, said Dias.

The minister also spoke to those present about initiatives under his portfolio, such as the New Bolsa Família, Brazil Without Hunger and the strengthening of the Unified Social Assistance System.

He also said that democracy in the country triumphed despite an “important political setback that compromised established social policies and programs” in recent years, in reference to the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

“Brazil is back and will pay close attention to social issues and the strengthening of its institutionality, as well as international cooperation in these areas”, Many Latin American countries have taken important steps in recent years on the path to this development, even while Brazil collected”, stated Dias.

Journalist Diana Fernandes received guests for the launch of the posthumous book “O Que Vi dos Presidentes: Fatos e Versões”, by journalist Cristiana Lôbo. Fernandes is co-author of the work. Murilo Lôbo, Cristiana’s widower, participated in the event. Planeta’s editorial director, Felipe Brandão, also attended the launch.
