The Senate decided this Tuesday (3) to postpone the vote on the proposed mini-electoral reform. As a result, the rules will not be valid for the 2024 municipal elections. To be valid next year, the mini-electoral reform would have to be approved by the senators by next Friday, October 6th, exactly one year before the election.
The postponement was announced by the rapporteur of the proposal in the Senate, Marcelo Castro (MDB-PI). “The mini-electoral reform will not be voted on by the Senate this week, which makes its application for the 2024 elections unfeasible. The Senate preferred to dedicate itself in more depth to the Electoral Code, already under my rapporteurship, and carry out a broader and more consistent electoral reform” , Castro said. on X (formerly Twitter).
The postponement can be seen as the difference in understanding about the time for analyzing the topic by the presidents of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP-AL) and the Federal Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG). The Chamber concluded voting on the mini-electoral reform on September 14th. The base text of PL 4438/23 was approved by deputies with 367 votes in favor and 86 against.
