Fluminense’s 4-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FIFA Club World Cup final had positive points.

That was the opinion of coach Fernando Diniz, on the edge of the pitch, at the final whistle. According to the commander, Flu maintaining its identity was the main thing for the team in 2023.

“We were Fluminense from the beginning to the end of the year. We took the best team in the world in the last five years. They had the ability to define. We conceded a goal very early. We conceded a goal that we couldn’t have with everyone behind. The team tried to play, with high pressure. It didn’t. We lost to a great team and now we will rest and think about next season”, commented the coach.

Applauded by the tricolors present in Jedá, Saudi Arabia, Fernando Diniz explained why even with the defeat the tricolors reacted in this way. “The fans recognized the team. There was no lack of courage. We don’t shy away. We try to do the best. We don’t have that much chance of playing against teams of this quality. And the more we play, the more we improve,” he opined.

Finally, Fernando Diniz preferred not to find individual flaws to justify the defeat. The first goal, for example, was a mistake by left-back Marcelo. In the third, it was Samuel Xavier’s turn to fail.

“If you say that the defensive failure is the whole team, it could be. It also happened against Al-Ahly, the players behind ended up saving us at times. We knew we couldn’t give any gaps in the defensive system because they take advantage of it very well. Most of the time, we managed to fit the marking well and when we fail once or twice, they end up taking advantage and they are very accurate”, he lamented.
