Men and women who, every day, make a commitment to deliver safe food to thousands of students celebrate “Lunch Box Day”

Manaus (AM) – October 30th celebrates Lunchbox Day. The date honors professionals, who are dedicated to ensuring that healthy and tasty food reaches students during their school routine. In Amazonas, the State Department of Education and School Sports currently has more than 2,700 professionals, men and women who, daily, are committed to delivering safe food to thousands of students in the state network.

To achieve this, there are many challenges and, in most cases, in addition to commitment, a lot of creativity is required when “serving”. The lunch men have a menu to follow. According to the established standards, children need to consume, out of the five days of the week, three days of meals with proteins and complements, and another two days of “sweet foods”, such as porridge, cookies, juices and the like.

Ana Cláudia Zany works as a lunch lady at Escola Estadual (EE) Princesa Isabel, located in the center of Manaus. The professional said that, in the school kitchen, school lunch cooks try to combine flavors and even reproduce dishes that children love, with the ingredients that make up the school lunch menu. For her, every day is a new experience.

“Among the students’ favorites is the guava pulp ‘milkshake’, but they also serve fish in orange sauce, farofa, seasoned rice, among others,”

highlighted Ana.

Ana Claudia’s partner in the kitchen, Diego Santos has been a cook for three years. The professional, who is also in the field of Physical Education, highlighted that it is clear how a nourished child results in a happy child, resulting in more willingness to learn in the classroom.

“Cooking is an act of love and just an extension of what we do at home. We have our children as part of our family and delivering delicious food to them makes us happy. Because we receive back the love that we give through cooking”,

said Diego.

Both Ana Cláudia and Diego, before becoming lunch workers, did not work in food. Ana is an accountant by training, and Diego is a physical educator. However, it is in the school kitchen that they both learn and share daily lessons and dedicate themselves increasingly to the area of food.

“I witnessed children who didn’t have anything to eat at home. Seeing this reality up close shook me a lot. I saw these children who were coming (to school) for lunch. This motivates me to do things with care and try to invent new things every day”,

said Ana.

For 5th year Elementary School student Izabelly dos Santos, Ana and Diego are superheroes, because they always save her and her friends’ day by bringing great food. The student said that her aunt is unable to buy lunch for her every day, but she knows she can count on the school’s professionals to eat well at the teaching unit.

“They make food for a living, then they feed me and my friends. This makes me very happy, that’s why I consider them my superheroes. They are always here to help me,”

said the student.
