Vieira says Brazil is seeking support for the UN Security Council

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, spoke again about Brazil’s desire to have a permanent seat on the UN Security Council. Alongside the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Commonwealth and Development of the United Kingdom, James Cleverly, during a press conference at the Itamaraty Palace, this Wednesday (24th), Vieira did not clarify, however, which are the strategies of the federal government to place the plan into practice.

“We intend to continue talking bilaterally with several countries. We are also going to continue working together with the countries that support us within the UN, whether in the General Assembly or in intergovernmental relations”, said the minister in the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

During the trip to Brazil to announce bilateral agreements with the country, the British Chancellor also reaffirmed British support for Lula’s desire to be present at the Council.

“We believe that Brazil has a voice that deserves to be heard beyond South America and that deserves a permanent seat on the Council. We support that,” said Cleverly.

Billion Dollar Investments in Brazil

Defending greater cooperation between Brazil and the United Kingdom, Cleverly announced that the British government intends to make a series of investments in the country. The secretary arrived in Brazil this Tuesday (23) and landed in the Amazon, where he announced the investment of R$ 12 million for AmazonFACE – a program that seeks to understand how the increase in CO2 in the atmosphere affects forests and their biodiversity.

The Chancellor also announced the Brazil-UK Pact Fund (Partnership for Accelerating the Climate Transition). With an initial investment of BRL 30 million, the project will support green investment areas, support indigenous peoples and local communities, promote bioeconomy initiatives and carbon markets.

Considered Brazil’s second largest partner in scientific projects, Cleverly also announced the Green and Inclusive Growth project, a partnership to boost the green economy. The project will also offer BRL 24 million in credit for sustainable research through the British credit agency, provided by Financing International for the Climate.

During Lula’s visit to England, for the coronation of King Charles III, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced an investment of R$ 499 million for the Amazon Fund. “With this, there are more than BRL 2 billion of investment by the United Kingdom in Brazil. But this is just the tip of the iceberg. We hope to increase these amounts by more billions of pounds through private investment over the next four years”, said Cleverly.

Minister returns to defend Brazil’s neutrality on the war in Ukraine

Also this Wednesday (24), Mauro Vieira participated in the Chamber’s Foreign Relations Committee. At the event, he spoke about the position that Brazil has taken on the war in Ukraine. Questioned about the conflict, Vieira claimed that the country has adopted a “constructive balance”.

Recently, Lula even made contradictory statements about the war and said that Ukraine could be as guilty as Russia for the war. Since then, the government has sought to backtrack on such allegations, but without giving up its neutrality, arguing that Russia’s “cancellation” makes a peace agreement difficult.

“We condemn Ukraine’s territorial violation and warn of the risks of Russia’s cancellation, which only reduces the spaces for dialogue,” said the head of the Itamaraty.
