“Sons don’t get in the way of work. What gets in the way of work is the machismo of those who think they do,” says social scientist Carla Cristina Garcia, coordinator of the Inanna Center for Research on Feminisms at PUC-SP.

She spoke with special reporter Teté Ribeiro for the third episode of the series “How to Have Financial Independence”.

The previous chapters dealt with debt, with Michael Viriato, author of the blog De Grão em Grão, from Sheetand partner at Casa do Investidor, and ageism, with strategy consultant Edson Moraes.

All videos are available on the TV Folha channel on YouTube.

For Carla Garcia, machismo related to the formal job market “has been an impediment for girls to find jobs that pay in accordance with their training and for them to be able to have financial independence in order to leave their parents’ house, have their own own home, travel, see the world”.

The anthropologist cites reports from young people who are asked about their personal lives and their desire to have children, for example, in job interviews. “The world is taking a turn to the extreme right, and the first people who lose rights in terms of work are women.”

The reports in the series “How to Have Financial Independence” bring recommendations from experts, such as financial planners and wealth managers, and testimonials from those who have achieved this goal.

In addition to videos, the series features text reports, which are published in the print edition on the last Monday of January, February, March and April. Online publication is the previous Sunday.
