President of the PL, Valdemar Costa Neto asked the mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), to clearly state that he wants the support of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in his campaign for re-election in 2024.

On Tuesday (12), Bolsonaro signaled support for federal deputy Ricardo Salles (PL-SP), contradicting the PL leadership’s tendency to support the current mayor.

Nunes has adopted a strategy of maintaining a safe distance from Bolsonaro, oscillating between expressions of affinity and distancing, with the aim of gaining the sympathy of Bolsonaro supporters without carrying the rejection associated with the former president.

“Bolsonaro is now picking on Nunes, because Nunes shares when they ask about Bolsonaro’s support. This is nonsense. He has to be firm about this, because to be elected he needs all of Bolsonaro’s votes. Bolsonaro had a vote in the capital . It lost [para Lula, em 2022]but he had a lot of votes”, said Valdemar in an interview this Friday (15) with journalist Darwin Valente, from O Diário de Mogi.

The leader also said that Salles “doesn’t give peace” to Bolsonaro, “doesn’t leave his office”, and that’s why the former president has indicated support for him. Valdemar published a reproduction of this phrase on his social networks, but deleted it shortly afterwards.

In the interview, Valdemar assessed that Nunes has a chance of winning the election, unlike Salles. According to him, the capital has a left-leaning electorate, so a center-right candidate like the current mayor would have a chance of beating Guilherme Boulos (PSOL), which would not happen with a far-right representative like Salles.

“We cannot be responsible for electing Boulos mayor of São Paulo. He is pretending to be good. Forget it,” he said. “These PSOL people are beyond repair. They’re bad people. You get the most extreme left-wing guy from PT and he doesn’t want to be PSOL. You see half a dozen PSOL candidates and you see the Carnival they have in the country.”

Valdemar also said he received a call on Wednesday (13) from the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), to discuss the issue. The former minister defends support for the current mayor.
