For the third year in a row, USP (University of São Paulo) is the only Latin American university to be among the one hundred institutions with the highest academic reputation in the world, according to the World Reputation Ranking 2023, released this Tuesday (13) by the consultancy British higher education THE (Times Higher Education).

USP was ranked between 81st and 90th. The ranking lists individually up to 50th position. From there, group the institutions ten by ten, since the difference between them is very small.

In the top three places are the North American universities of Harvard (1st place, for the 13th year in a row), MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2nd) and Stanford (3rd).

Brazil is the only country in Latin America to have at least one classified university. In the position achieved, USP is on par with institutions such as Leiden University (Netherlands), the Australian National University (Australia) and the University of Bonn (Germany). Unicamp (State University of Campinas) is the other Brazilian on the list, classified in group 151-175.

In total, 31 countries had universities ranked among the top 200. The United States is the country with the most institutions on the list, 52. Next comes the United Kingdom, with 20 institutions; China, with 15, and Germany, with 14.

The survey for the ranking hears only experienced academics with published texts, who give their opinion on excellence in research and teaching in their disciplines and in institutions with which they are familiar. The 2023 ranking is based on a survey conducted between October 2022 and January 2023, which received 38,796 responses from 166 countries.

Academics are asked about their knowledge in their specific disciplines. They are not asked to create rankings or list a wide range of institutions; they only name a maximum of 15 universities that they believe are the best in both research and teaching in their field.

“The two scores for research and teaching are combined in a 2 to 1 ratio, giving more weight to the research, because our expert consultants suggested there is greater confidence in respondents’ ability to make accurate judgments about the quality of the research,” explains the consultancy .

According to Erika Yamamoto, from Jornal da USP, the points for evaluating reputation refer to the number of times an institution was cited by interviewees as being the best in their respective fields of knowledge. “The academics consulted could highlight the universities that they considered to be the strongest, regionally and globally, in their specific areas, among the more than 6,000 higher education institutions in the world.”
