After a series of internal fights, members of União Brasil approved this Thursday (29) the change in command of the party.

At a party convention, the party’s new directory elected a new executive, who will take office in June, which will lead to the replacement of the current party president, federal deputy Luciano Bivar (PE). In his place, the current vice-president, Antônio Rueda, will take office.

The former mayor of Salvador ACM Neto, who currently holds the position of general secretary of the party, will be the 1st vice-president.

Bivar even canceled this Thursday’s convention, in a unilateral act, in an attempt to avoid his future replacement – his term runs until May.

Members of the party directory, however, argued that the leader could not make this decision, as the convention was approved by the TSE (Superior Electoral Court), and approved an opposing appeal.

“We have more than two-thirds of the conventional members and members of the current executive. Bivar does not have the power to cancel ex officio a convention called by the majority,” he told Sheet the leader of União Brasil in the Chamber, Elmar Nascimento (BA).

The deputy is part of the wing that wanted to replace Bivar with Rueda. The future president has broad support in the party. They also defended the change of important names in the party, such as the leader of the party in the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre (AP) and ministers Celso Sabino (Tourism) and Juscelino Filho (Communications).

Bivar, in turn, called the convention illegitimate and clandestine and threatened to question it in court.

“The convention is riddled with visions. As it has these vices, what is required for the good conduct of a convention is that the Executive be scheduled and meet and a new date be set. Other than that, it is susceptible to judicialization”, he stated.

“It’s stupid to do that. This convention doesn’t exist. Anything they’re doing there is clandestine.”

Bivar also said that there are people who want to use the party to attract business and that it has to be led by a politician, not “by a firm of lawyers”. Rueda is a lawyer.

The deputy was president of the PSL for more than 20 years and managed to remain in charge of União Brasil, the result of the merger of the former party with DEM, which took place in 2021.

Since it was created, União Brasil has experienced internal conflicts between the DEM and PSL wings. The conflagration reached its peak this week, on the eve of the convention.

In recent days, the wing linked to Rueda accused Bivar of having made threats against the future president of the party, something that the deputy denies.

The decision to bring forward the party convention, which would only take place in May, was taken after a fight between Neto and Bivar last August.

That month represented the height of the raids and an operation was launched to try to remove Bivar from the presidency.

The last straw, say members of the party, was a discussion that occurred between Neto and Bivar.

The reason was disagreements about the Amazonas directory. Meeting in Brasília, the party president pointed the finger at Neto and, according to reports, made a series of insults.

ACM Neto then began to organize a partisan response to the case. Under pressure, Bivar has talked about taking leave from his position.

In the case involving Amazonas, the deputy from Pernambuco issued a monocratic act calling a convention in Manaus in an attempt to elect names linked to him in the state. Party representatives went to court and managed to review the act.
