União Brasil and Tarcísio live in a dispute over a supposed agreement – 06/26/2023 – Panel

The relationship between Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) and União Brasil in São Paulo has reached a peak of tension in recent weeks, and some of those involved are even talking about the possibility of a rupture.

The reason lies in what party members classify as a breach of agreement by the occupant of Palácio dos Bandeirantes — who, in turn, has told allies that he does not intend to give in to pressure from the party.

According to members of the caption’s leadership, support for Tarcísio in the second round, in 2022, was conditioned to the control of CDHU (Companhia de Desenvolvimento Housing Urbano). However, they say, even though the party has engaged in the election of the governor, it has not been contemplated.

In recent meetings with Arthur Lima, secretary of the Civil House of Tarcísio, leaders of União Brasil, such as Antonio Rueda, vice-president of the acronym, and Milton Leite, mayor of São Paulo, exposed their dissatisfaction.

The Union complains of supposedly making the nominations to Gilberto Kassab, secretary of government, but seeing them ignored by Lima.

In this scenario, there are deputies among the eight of the party’s state bench who talk about breaking with the government’s base and assuming independent action in the Legislative Assembly.

On Tuesday (20), in a message to the government, the Union decided to obstruct the vote on a project authored by the Executive that sought resources for the construction of the intercity train, making it difficult to approve the text. The parliamentarians affirm that the obstruction instruction is maintained for the next votes, while leaders of União Brasil and of the Tarcísio government are still negotiating.

The governor, in turn, has shown discomfort with the situation. He has been telling allies that he will not give in to pressure like that of União Brasil and that he intends to block the political allotment of the state administration. As Tarcísio argues, the party’s parliamentarians will have to explain to society the reason why the train and other agendas are eventually not approved by Alesp.

The tension risks alienating two parties among the most important in the arc of alliances that the mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), is trying to assemble for his re-election in 2024.

There may also be reflections on the municipal election in the capital. Despite occasional quarrels, Nunes is close to Milton Leite, head of União Brasil, who lost space in the state administration with the arrival of Tarcísio. On the other side are Republicans, from Tarcísio, and PSD, from Kassab.
