CPI of the 8/1

Coronel received approval from the STF to remain silent on issues that could lead to self-incrimination and even presented a medical certificate

Brasilia DF) – The CPI of 8/1 interrogates, this Monday (26), Jorge Eduardo Naime, former head of the Operational Department (DOP) of the Military Police of the Federal District (PMDF). He claims that the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin) only warned the police forces about the invasion at 10 am.

Naime mentions the existence of an Abin report, confirming the release of information about acts at 10 am. “Either the agencies did not pass the information to the secretary [de Segurança] and the general command, or they were inert”, said the colonel.

According to Naime, the day before the acts a group called “Sisbin” was created. The colonel points out that Abin’s report indicates likely participation of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s (PT) GSI.

He mentions by name: the head of the Intelligence Center, Colonel Reginaldo; Metropolitan Regional Policing Command I, Junior Lieutenant; the Dr. Marília, federal delegate and head of the undersecretary of intelligence; and PMDF Colonel Jorge Henerique Pinto.

“When they didn’t install the DOP, they blinded the head of the Operations Department and the deputy general commander. They blinded the entire operating arm”,

shot Jorge Eduardo Naime.

The colonel, arrested since January, declared again that “the PM’s action has always been limited by the Armed Forces”. Naime also claims to have been prevented from leading protesters out of Alvorada, on 12/12 last year, by Bolsonaro’s Institutional Security Office (GSI).

His testimony continues the work of the Joint Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry that investigates the coup acts that took place in Brasilia.

Earlier, the colonel received approval from the STF to remain silent on issues that could lead to self-incrimination and even presented a certificate of depression that would exempt him from attending the commission. The collegiate secretary, however, asked for a reassessment of the report by the medical board of the Federal Senate.

The colonel went through the medical checkup and assured that, regardless of the report, he would speak to the commission that investigates the coup acts of January 8, in Brasilia.

Naime began his statement saying he was not in full physical condition and claims to have been in prison for five months without knowing why. He recalls being on leave when he was called to stop the coup actions on 1/8. According to the colonel, his condition as a prisoner prevented him from learning about the progress of the investigations.

“Today, even in a not very favorable mental condition, I decided to come here out of respect for your Excellency, out of respect for the National Congress, a House that I have always defended, that I have always operated and have always been present in the biggest operations with this House, defending the Democratic state”,

said Naime to the president of the Mixed CPI, Arthur Maia (União-BA).

The PM colonel also said he was prevented by the Institutional Security Office (GSI), still during the Bolsonaro government, from escorting demonstrators who would go to the Alvorada Palace to talk to the then president, on December 12, 2022. According to Naime, when he arrived at the scene, Bolsonaristas were already talking to the head of the federal Executive.

Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), authorized the former head of the Operational Department of the Military Police of the Federal District (PMDF) Jorge Eduardo Naime to remain silent on issues that could lead to self-incrimination at the CPI. Colonel Naime’s testimony is scheduled to take place this Monday (26), at 2 pm.

The decision partially complied with the request of the colonel’s defense to the Supreme Court so that Naime would not be forced to attend the CPI of 8/1. The request for safe conduct, according to the lawyers, aims to prevent the PMDF officer from suffering “constraints” emanating from the members of the Joint Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry, held in the National Congress.

“The witness has the duty to express his opinion on the facts and events related to the purpose of the CPMI linked to the exercise of his public function that he then exercised, however, the guarantee of non-self-incrimination must be ensured, if asked to answer questions whose answers may result in harm or incrimination.”

wrote Moraes, in the decision.
