Ukrainians charge Lula with emphatic support for Zelensky – 01/24/2023 – Panel

The representatives in Brazil of the World Congress of Ukrainians sent a letter to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) to congratulate the president on taking office and ask for support for Volodimir Zelensky to resist the Russian invasion.

The petista was criticized last year after telling the American magazine Time that he considers the president of Ukraine as responsible for the war as the Russian Vladimir Putin.

In the letter, the organization calls on the Brazilian government “to increase aid to Ukraine in 2023 and provide all possible political and diplomatic support” to Kiev.

It also appeals to Brazil to help “stop this brutal war” and join international initiatives “aimed at bringing the aggressor state of the Russian Federation to justice for crimes committed against the people of Ukraine.”

Brazil has a close relationship with Putin, which already existed under Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and was maintained with Lula. When commenting on the situation of the dictatorship in Venezuela, this Monday (23), on a trip to Argentina, the PT said he was “against the territorial occupation as Russia did in Ukraine”.

The material was sent to the Presidency by the World Congress of Ukrainians, which claims to defend the interests of 20 million Ukrainians in the diaspora in more than 60 countries, and by the Brazilian Ukrainian Central Representation, which claims to represent more than 600,000 Brazilian Ukrainians.

The organizations also showed solidarity with Lula because of the coup acts on the 8th, saying they were “deeply shocked by the recent heinous and insidious attack on Brazil’s democratically elected institutions”.

“We are convinced that, with your leadership, Brazil will follow the path of successful development and will strengthen its role as a regional leader and one of the most influential global actors”, they affirmed, making a comparison between the act of the extremists in Brasília and “the idea promoted by the criminal regime” of Putin.

“Your support [de Lula] to Ukraine and its people will not only help stop this brutal war and restore peace, but will also strengthen Brazil’s authority in the world,” wrote Paul Grod and Vitório Sorotiuk, presidents of the CMU and RCUB respectively.
