THE National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) informed, this Tuesday (24), that there were 11 occurrences associated with vandalism in towers in the energy transmission system, at the beginning of the year. Of the total, there were 3 records in Rondônia, 4 in Paraná, 3 in São Paulo and 1 in Mato Grosso). In these 11 occurrences, 4 towers were knocked down (3 in Rondônia and 1 in Paraná) and 16 damaged (6 in Paraná, 3 in São Paulo, 6 in Rondônia, 1 in Mato Grosso).

The balance came after confirmation, by the Federal Police, of an investigation into an attempt to sabotage a power tower located in the rural area between the municipalities of Toledo and São Pedro do Iguaçu, in western Paraná.

Through an official note, Aneel stated that since the beginning of the year it has been following atypical events related to attacks on power towers, having determined a set of measures to reinforce security and to identify malfunctions in transmission facilities throughout Brazil. The agency adds that it has maintained work schedules with the Federal Police, the Federal Highway Police and the Brazilian Intelligence Agency, to share information, in addition to passing on the situation to the Ministry of Mines and Energy.

“The robustness of the system, combined with the frequent monitoring of the transmission facilities and the surveillance of the transmitters, has shown favorable results in terms of anticipating malfunctions in the towers and correcting the damage without causing the towers to fall”, says Aneel.
