UFAM study produces books that address indigenous, African and Afro-Brazilian literature

Manaus (AM) – The study coordinated by the researcher at the Federal University of Amazonas (Ufam), Adriana Cristina Aguiar Rodrigues, resulted in the production of two books, “Indigenous literature: reading practices for the classroom” and “African literatures, Afro-Brazilian literature: practices readers for the classroom.” The launch takes place this Thursday (14), at 5:15 pm, during the “IX SELIT – World Literature Seminar – world experiences”, which will take place in the Rio Negro auditorium, located in the northern sector of the Ufam campus.

The works are aimed especially at basic education teachers and undergraduate students, who can find in the books mechanisms that help in planning activities that include indigenous, Afro-Brazilian and African cultures and literatures.

Investigating strategies for reading practices aimed at basic education in Amazonas, with a focus on indigenous, Afro-Brazilian and African literatures and cultures, is the objective of the research “African literatures and Afro-Brazilian literature: reading practices for the classroom” , developed with support from the Government of Amazonas, through the Amazonas State Research Support Foundation (Fapeam).

“We consider that the two works can contribute considerably to the inclusion, in the classroom, of cultures of historically silenced people, but who have contributed and continue to contribute strongly to what constitutes Brazilian identity”,

said the researcher.

PhD in Literary Theory and History, Adriana highlights that, although the laws of Nº 10,639/2003 and Nº 11,645/2008 require, in all public and private basic education, the teaching of indigenous, Afro-Brazilian and African culture and history, after 20 years of Law 10,639/2003, there is still a noticeable absence in relation to these contents.

According to her, each chapter of the works produced in the research is focused on the construction of activities for teachers who work from the first years of elementary school to the final years of high school, also including Youth and Adult Education (EJA).

“Work like this is fundamental because it goes beyond university classrooms and the ways of thinking in a laboratory. This is because research combines social commitment, historical reparation, subalternized peoples and cultures with a way of doing science, that is, a science that is done with the participation of all the agents involved. In this case, teachers, undergraduate students, basic education students”,

says Adriana.

The works are authored by researchers Adriana Cristina Aguiar Rodrigues, Edla Cristina Rodrigues Caldas, Lucila Bonina Teixeira Simões and Priscila Vasques Castro Dantas, responsible for “Indigenous Literature: reading practices for the classroom”; and Adriana Cristina and Edla Cristina who also wrote “African literatures, Afro-Brazilian literature: reading practices for the classroom”, with Nicia Petreceli Zucolo and Providence Bampoky.

The books also feature the participation of researchers and professors from Ufam, the State University of Amazonas (UEA), the State Department of Education and Sports, the Municipal Department of Education (Semed), the Federal University of Pará (UFPA) and the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB); and were published by the Editora da Universidade Federal do Acre and the Editora do Núcleo de Estudos das Culturas Amazônicas e Pan-Amazônicas. In Amazonas, the material will be distributed free of charge to teachers in municipal and state education networks in e-book format.
