Tucanos advocate that Aloysio take leave, and he reacts – 02/07/2024 – Panel

Members of the PSDB’s national leadership told the Panel that they expect former chancellor Aloysio Nunes to take the initiative to leave the party from the moment he begins to head the strategic affairs division of the Apex office in Brussels, position for which he was chosen by the Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) government.

According to one of the leaders interviewed by the column, Nunes is very loved and respected in the party, but the gesture would be well received so as not to generate precedents for toucans in positions in the PT administration.

Since the end of 2023, when Marconi Perillo assumed the presidency of the PSDB in place of Eduardo Leite, the party has tried to more openly demarcate its opposition to the Lula government.

In 2024, for example, the leadership of the party has invested in the strategy of launching its own candidacies for the municipal elections in the largest cities, with an emphasis on the discourse of building an alternative to PT and Bolsonarism.

When contacted by the Panel, Nunes states that he does not intend to leave the PSDB and that, if they want, they can try to expel him.

The former chancellor states that the argument underlying the request for a license is that Bolsonarism and Lulism would be two radicalisms that must be equally fought. According to Nunes, it is “a ploy of right-wing opportunism that is very present in the PSDB”.

“A party that has democracy in its name must combat extreme right-wing radicalism: this is the denial of democracy and its fundamental values, science and human rights”, he adds.

Nunes says that Lula is not a radical. “He is a pragmatic reformer who grew, and so did his party, over years of democratic struggles. This ‘two radicalisms’ thing is just too much talk,” says the toucan.

“It is a government of social democratic inspiration, like us [do PSDB] We went, a little further to the left. The idea that there are two radicalisms definitely separates me from this group [do PSDB]. The PSDB has to align itself with democratic camps, against the extreme right, which is active and threatening, and not just in Brazil. That is the correct position of a democratic party,” he adds.

The former senator adds a provocation to those who advocate taking a leave of absence from the PSDB: “Did they ask the leader of the PSDB in the Senate, Izalci Lucas, to take a leave of absence after visiting the Bolsonaro supporters arrested on January 8th in Papuda?”
