Tribunal de Minas establishes partnerships with universities in Portugal – 10/07/2023 – Frederico Vasconcelos

A delegation from the Court of Justice of Minas Gerais stayed in Portugal for a week to carry out visits and establish partnerships with study centers and Law Schools in Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra.

This is the Partnership Project with Educational Institutions in Portugal, in celebration of the 45th anniversary of the Escola Judicial Desembargador Edésio Fernandes (EJEF), of the Minas Gerais court.

Order from the president of the TJ-MG, judge José Arthur de Carvalho Pereira Filho, designated the following delegation: judges Renato Luís Dresch, Lilian Maciel Santos, Saulo Versiani Penna and Oswaldo Oliveira Araújo Firmo; assistant judge Carlos Márcio de Souza Macedo and executive director Paula Andrade Prosdocimi da Silva.

The delegation was led by Dresch, second vice-president of TJ-MG and school superintendent.

The court did not provide a total estimate of expenses. It did not confirm the information received by the blog that the total daily rate would reach R$ 120 thousand (not including tickets).

The TJ-MG reported that “the values ​​referring to daily rates and tickets are in accordance with Resolution No. 660/2011 and Ordinance No. 4083/2018, and within the budget forecast for the current year 2023, intended for the School’s training actions Judicial Judge Edésio Fernandes”.

He also reported that there was no participation or resources from other institutions, and that the magistrates were not accompanied by anyone outside the designated delegation.

Partnerships and visits

From October 2nd to 6th, the EJEF team signed a Partnership Agreement and technical visits with the following educational institutions: Center for Judicial Studies (CEJ); Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon – FDUL; Faculty of Law of the University of Porto – FDUP and Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra.

At the Center for Legal Studies – CEJ, of the Ministry of Justice of Portugal, studies began that culminated in the structuring of EJEF as the first Judicial School in Brazil.

On Friday (6), the magistrates participated in the “Luso-Brazilian Law Colloquium: History and Specificities” at Columbia University.

According to TJ-MG, the colloquium was an initiative of the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra.

“It constitutes the first joint activity to form the educational partnership between EJEF/TJMG and that Portuguese legal education entity, signed for academic, scientific and cultural cooperation and exchange.” The teaching and research projects that will serve the training of magistrates and TJ-MG employees.

The partnership with the University of Coimbra “appears as the first project of joint organization and exchange of teachers”. The judges were guest speakers.

The following topics were discussed at the colloquium:

– Are there persistences and ruptures in the history of Luso-Brazilian Law?

– What are the limits of public powers?

– What are the perspectives and challenges of mediation and arbitration in conflict resolution?

The University of Coimbra announced the participation, among others, of the president of the Supreme Court of Justice of Portugal, judge advisor Henrique Araújo, and the vice-rector for External Relations and UC Alumni, João Nuno Calvão da Silva.

Rui de Figueiredo Marcos, director of the Sino-Lusófona Academy and Full Professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra, and judge Renato Dresch participated in the closing session.
