A hoard of more than 700 gold coins from the US Civil War era, found buried in a cornfield in the state of Kentucky, is up for sale and millions of dollars are expected to be paid for it.

The “Great Treasure of Kentucky” was discovered on a farm earlier this year, according to the company that classified the coins and the one selling them. The exact location and identity of whoever found the coins has not been revealed.

According to GovMint.com, responsible for the sale, the treasure dates from 1840 to 1863 and includes $1, $10 and $20 coins.

Among them are 18 $20 gold Liberty coins minted in 1863 in Philadelphia, considered rare in the industry. According to the company, each reaches six-figure values among collectors.

“The staggering figure of more than $700 worth of gold represents a virtual time capsule of Civil War-era coin,” Jeff Garrett, a coin dealer who was contacted by the man who found the treasure, said in a statement.

Kentucky adopted a neutral position during the 1861-1865 Civil War between the slave-owning South and the North, but was eventually drawn into the conflict.

“The Great Treasure of Kentucky may have been a result of this conflict, with the coins lost for over 150 years,” said the Numismatic Guaranty Company, which certified the authenticity of the find.
