There’s St. Patrick’s Day; but no draft Guinness – 03/14/2024 – Full Glass

Next Sunday (17th), a week after the Oscars, St. Patrick’s Day will be celebrated, which should attract many more people. It’s a different way of saying that it’s world excuse day to drink a lot of Guinness — Catholics forgive me.

As this humble blogger has said before, Dublin-based dry stout is the most famous black liquid in the world — some might want to defend coffee or even that petroleum thing, but I won’t be convinced. Guinness is also Ireland’s most imported product — here I agree to discuss it with U2 fans.

However, unlike what happens in Dublin, Kentucky or in the bar near Aquaman’s house (a fan of beer, at least in the cinemas), São Paulo residents will be unlikely to find an authentic draft Guinness to drink here this Saint Patrick’s Day.

The beer simply disappeared. The photo above, which illustrates this text, was somewhere in the past. The little pub with an Irish accent, Little Cronin, near Av. Angélica, there is no more — one of the pandemic casualties. The Guinness draft beer served there should exist in other bars, especially in pub culture. But the classic liquid has been missing for some time.

Responsible for Guinness also in Brazil, Diageo was contacted, but did not comment until the conclusion of this text. It’s easy to talk to Diageo about some gin or whiskey brands that they also import, but about Irish beer…

There are some urban legends behind the disappearance of Guinness draft beer. Just rumors, never confirmed. One of them spoke of 500 barrels lost in the port of Vitória, we don’t know how, perhaps due to the expiration date. It’s somewhere between pirate adventure and slapstick comedy, depending on which brewer counts.

This blogger did a search for traditional pubs to see if he had the luck of a leprechaun, but came up empty. At The Blue Pub (with units in Jardim Paulista and Itaim Bibi) there will be Guinness in a can (R$52), in addition to the traditional green draft beer (some light draft beer with coloring). The canned version will also be served at the Kia Ora Pub.

The Joy Bar serves green draft beer. And they warned that “the barrel of Guinness is missing in Brazil”.

At the traditional O’Malley’s, with shows scheduled throughout the week, the profile says that “Guinness has been in short supply since the pandemic.” The pub near Paulista will have the good Wexford Irish Cream Ale, Belhavem Black Stout and green draft beer.

At Empório Alto dos Pinheiros, the beloved EAP, a house that houses beers of all colors and tastes, the last barrel of Guinness was hitched in the late September 2022. From then on, a few cans and look. At this St. Patrick’s, Paulo Almeida will serve dry stout from Prisma and an Irish red from Dádiva.

Paulo says that, even though there are good dry stout options available, fresh, people always ask for Guinness. It’s a classic.

This blogger got his small reserve of cans on sale on some website (and already close to the expiration date). I have no problem drinking canned Guinness, but I miss draft beer coming out of the tap.
