The presence of women in street races grows – 08/22/2023 – Na Corrida

The balance of the first semester brings good (and not so good) news for the road racing segment. Of the positive news, perhaps the most relevant is the growth of the female presence in the tests. According to a survey by TicketSports, the largest Brazilian platform for the sale of registrations for endurance events, women account for 47.25% of the total number of subscribers to road races in the country, while men are 52.75%.

The gender difference of just over five percentage points reached 10 points last year when racing resumed after the pandemic pause. In 2022, registrants were 55% male and 45% female.

“After the uncertainties of the post-pandemic return, it is natural that the female presence in competitions grows, since this is an audience with a great sense of community and that values ​​health”, evaluates Daniel Krutman, CEO of TicketSports, who presented the numbers during the TS Summit, in São Paulo.

Other numbers confirm the advance of street racing in the country. During the first semester, there was a growth of 14% in the number of test organizers, and 15% in the number of events held in relation to the same period last year. In terms of the number of registrations sold, the increase was even more significant, above 20%. On the other hand, the average ticket — that is, the average amount paid by runners — shrank by 3%.

The superlative numbers are viewed with caution by Krutman. He explains that, at the beginning of last year, many tests had not yet returned with 100% of their capacity, which justifies the sharp growth. As for the second half, the expectation is for expansion close to zero. “We had a second half of 2022 already normalized, so the comparison with last year points to a scenario of stability”, he explains.

TicketSport’s research also shows a tendency for smaller races to appear, with distances varying between 3km and 10km. These events require less infrastructure, can be operated with reduced teams and charge cheaper tickets. “This expansion in the number of organizers may not be sustainable in the long term, as there is a limit to the number of events that runners are willing to participate in.”

Krutman calculates that around 3.5 million registrations are marketed annually. For him, this number is modest for a country with the size and population of Brazil. “Our reality is that people lack time, and the lack of time stems from lack of financial resources. Those who need to run after to pay the bills hardly find time to train”.
