The inauguration of President Lula, former minister Anderson Torres and Federal Supreme Court minister Alexandre de Moraes lead searches for politics on Google in 2023. Information about searches in Brazil was released last week by the platform.

First lady Janja and impeached federal deputy Deltan Dallagnol also appear on the list, as well as terms such as “100-year secrecy” and “Bolsonaro ineligible”.

Remember the news that motivated the main searches about politics made on the search engine.

Lula’s inauguration

The most sought after political topic of the year was the inauguration for Lula’s (PT) third term. The ceremony took place under security concerns due to tension between his voters and supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

One person was detained by police after being caught with a knife and fireworks, but the ceremony had no serious incidents.

On that occasion, Bolsonaro broke the democratic rite and did not participate in the event to hand over the presidential sash to his successor. A diverse group, made up of a person with a disability, an indigenous person, a black person, a woman, a worker and a child, passed the sash to President Lula.

Throughout the year, however, the Lula government has been criticized for the lack of representation when appointing people to important positions, such as open vacancies for the STF.

Anderson Torres

Anderson Torres, former Secretary of Public Security of the Federal District, was the second most viewed political topic on the search engine. The peak of the searches was between January 8 and 14, when he was arrested.

Torres, also a former Minister of Justice, was accused of omission in relation to the January 8 coup attack that resulted in the depredation of the headquarters of the three Powers, in Brasília, by Bolsonaro supporters.

He was arrested by the Federal Police on January 14, when he returned from a trip from the United States. The previous day, he had been dismissed from office by the governor of the Federal District, Ibaneis Rocha (MDB). On the 12th, a coup draft was found in the former secretary’s house by the Federal Police.

The CPI on the January 8 attacks called for Torres to be indicted; he has always denied the allegations.

Alexandre de Moraes

STF minister Alexandre de Moraes came in third place in the searches, also with greater interest in searches between the 8th and 14th of January.

The magistrate played a decisive role in moments of tension that the Republic has experienced since the elections, when the Federal Highway Police under Bolsonaro carried out checks that delayed voters in the second round, according to the Electoral Court.

He is also the rapporteur for criminal actions involving people accused of vandalizing the headquarters of the three Powers. A survey by ECMI (School of Communication, Media and Information) at FGV (Fundação Getúlio Vargas) indicates a large volume of posts about the minister also on social media in 2023.

Janja

Rosângela da Silva, known as Janja, was also one of the most searched topics this year. The first lady appears in fourth place on the list, with interest peaking between January 1st and 7th.

With a degree in sociology from the Federal University of Paraná, Janja has been a member of the PT since 1983. She married Lula in May 2022. Her role in the government is marked by criticism, inside and outside the administration, because of her leading role.

Janja earned the nickname Lula’s “algorithm” because it keeps him updated on what happens in the virtual environment and measures how government actions are received on the internet. For her, much of the criticism about her strong role in government stems from misogyny.

Tax reform

Tax Reform was the fifth most searched term. It was highlighted in July, when it was approved in the Chamber of Deputies.

On November 8, the proposal was also approved in the Senate. The reform, which unifies five taxes on consumption, was seen as the main economic challenge of the first year of the new Lula government.

The victory occurred with the support of opposition politicians, such as the PL, despite Bolsonaro’s request for parliamentarians to vote against the proposal. The pressure generated a public disagreement between the former president and his ally Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), current governor of São Paulo.

This Friday (15), the Chamber gave final approval to the reform, and the text now goes to promulgation.

Also on the most searched list, in this order, were the subjects “federal intervention”, adopted in the security of the DF after the coup attacks; the name of Deltan Dallagnol, due to the revocation of his mandate as federal deputy by the TSE (Superior Electoral Court) in May; and senator Marcos do Val (Podemos-ES), who linked Bolsonaro to a coup plot to record Alexandre de Moraes and prevent Lula from taking office.

The expression “100-year secrecy” was also included, related to the Lula government’s decision to review the restriction of access to information on actions involving the Bolsonaro administration, and “Bolsonaro ineligible”, regarding the TSE’s decision in June 2023.
