The manager’s kiss on the mouth of the Spanish player – 08/21/2023 – Sandro Macedo

Jenni Hermoso, number 10 for Spain, spoke on the field, almost crying, moved by the unprecedented title of her selection in the Women’s Cup, played in Australia / New Zealand.

In the final, the selection beat England, who had a slight favoritism, by 1 to 0. And Hermoso even missed a penalty in normal time. In his first post-title interview, he said that was the happiest day of his life.

Moments later, a kiss on the mouth, not consented, spoiled what was supposed to be just a party in Spain. It was on the awards podium when the pathetic president of the Spanish federation, Luis Rubiales, thought he was at the Rubiales clan barbecue, held the athlete’s head in both hands, after hugging her, and kissed her on the mouth.

At the time, no one really noticed and no one called attention to the fact in the broadcast. Queen Letizia of Spain herself was on the podium receiving the players and Rubiales’ action went unnoticed. However, the kiss that was taken went viral on the networks and Hermoso spoke in a live still in the locker room. “I didn’t like it,” he said.

Since Michael Corleone’s kiss on his brother Fredo, in “The Godfather 2”, in the middle of New Year’s Eve, a kiss has not been such a party killer.

Rubiales’ kiss managed to overcome the embarrassment of the men’s Cup podium, when Messi was forced to don a black cape before lifting the cup in Qatar.

In Qatar or in Australia, evidently, Fifa did not pronounce itself.

As president of the Spanish federation, Rubiales has a hierarchical relationship with coaching staff and players. He’s the big boss and he’s taken advantage of this condition, which makes it worse.

This Monday (21), the day after the title, Rubiales asked for a very lame apology, meaning that the world did not know how to interpret a gesture that is common in Spain.

In Spain, Brazil, Australia and most of the world, non-consensual kissing is harassment. It is the same type of harassment that we see (and complain about) against female reporters at the stadium door, when they are attacked by fans who think it is normal to touch or take advantage of any woman who passes in front of them. It is not normal. In Brazil, the previous president of the CBF, Rogério Caboclo, was removed after accusations of harassment against an employee (in a more serious case).

Ministers and Spanish authorities have already spoken out after the episode, classifying Rubiales’ kiss as an unacceptable action. But it’s about time for Spain to start talking less and acting more in relation to what happens around its football — let’s not forget the country’s serious problems in relation to racism, exacerbated in the cases against Vinicius Jr.

It is also good to remember that Spain has already reached the World Cup with a crisis between part of the squad and the coach. Many asked for a change of coach, but Rubiales embraced the players and kept the coach. With this context, would Hermoso have the strength to confront the leader?

Pereira x Pereira
This Tuesday (22) begins the quarterfinal phase of the Libertadores, with three Brazilians among the eight participants, all favorites, in different degrees. The competition has already had surprising results in the round of 16, with Olímpia eliminating Flamengo, Bolívar taking Atlhetico-PR and Deportivo Pereira passing through Independiente del Valle.

But there is one constant, Palmeiras. President Leila Pereira’s team, which faces Deportivo Pereira, has been contesting and going through the quarterfinals since 2020, when they eliminated Libertad; in 2021, São Paulo, and in 2022, Atlético Mineiro. And in none of them did the alviverde team arrive so favored against Pereira’s Colombian team. However, the big clash of the quarters is Argentine: Boca Juniors x Racing.

Barretos at Maracanã
This scribe starts today the campaign to defend that next year’s Peão de Barretos Festival be transferred to the imposing Maracanã. The lawn has already turned into a pasture. It would be a big event.
