The government needs to trust the military, says STM – 05/11/2023 – Panel

The president of the STM (Superior Military Court), Joseli Parente Camelo, says that, after January 8th, the government needs to trust the Armed Forces again. For this, he defends the approval of the bill that removes military personnel who carry out political activities to the reserve, as a way of returning the institution exclusively to the activities provided for in the Constitution.

“When he starts to deviate too much from his functions, there is interference. We need to turn to the activities that are attributed to us by the Constitution: the defense of the homeland and sovereignty”, he says.

He assesses, however, that this recovery of confidence is already happening and points to the recent contacts of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) with the Armed Forces as an indication of the rapprochement.

Last Tuesday (9), for example, Lula went to Embraer in Gavião Peixoto (SP) to inaugurate the assembly line for the F-9 Gripen fighters. The president of STM also attended the ceremony.

For the military, the anti-democratic attacks of January 8 are just not a page turned because, while they are being investigated, the commanders must be attentive to possible “effervescence”. “But the Armed Forces are a very hierarchical institution. Gradually, based on the signals that come from the commanders, this is diluted”, he maintains.
