Wilson Lima invites Coca-Cola to renew partnership for sustainable development

As part of an agenda in the United States, the governor delivered a letter of intent to company executives to expand actions in the state

Atlanta (USA) – Governor Wilson Lima delivered, this Thursday (11), a letter of intent to Coca-Cola executives to renew the partnership between the Government of Amazonas and the company in favor of the state’s sustainable development. The document formalizing the invitation to expand the partnership was delivered at the company’s headquarters in Atlanta (Georgia, United States).

On the occasion, the directors presented the Coca-Cola plant and sustainable programs to the governor. The partnership with the State has lasted more than three decades – time that the company has been installed in the Industrial Pole of Manaus. For Wilson Lima, the meeting reinforced the importance of the union between the State and the private sector to expand actions aimed at the sustainable development of the region.

“All these partnerships that we have made with Coca-Cola are important and I came here (at the company’s headquarters, in the USA) to deliver a letter reinforcing this partnership and, naturally, working to increase these activities and actions taken together with the State Government”, said Governor Wilson Lima.

In addition to the head of the largest Brazilian state, the company’s president of International Development, Henrique Braun; senior vice president and director of Communications, Sustainability and Strategic Partnerships, Beatriz Perez; Vice President of Global Policy, Environmental Sustainability and Social Impact, Michael Goltzman; the leader of the Government Relations area of ​​Coca-Cola in Brazil, Victor Bicca; in addition to the Secretary of State for the Environment, Eduardo Taveira; and the chief secretary of the Civil House, Flávio Antony.

Letter of intent

Among the commitments contained in the document are actions aimed at reducing waste; conscious consumption; energy reuse and recycling; promotion of low-emission production chains; reduction of carbon emissions in major events; strengthening of the defense of the Industrial Pole of Manaus, especially in sustainable activities, such as the concentrate pole; and expansion of the offer of Environmental Services in the Conservation Units of Amazonas.

“With a focus on sustainability and sustainable economic development in the region, Coca-Cola Brasil reinforces its commitment to continue contributing to the generation of jobs and income and also to the protection of the Amazon rainforest. Receiving leaders from Amazonas at our headquarters in Atlanta is an opportunity to reinforce our commitment to the entire region,” said the director of Government Relations for Coca-Cola Brazil, Victor Bicca.

Partnership and presence in the Amazon

Coca-Cola has been operating in the Amazon for 33 years with Recofarma, the concentrate factory that holds the title of largest exporter among the companies installed in the Industrial Pole of Manaus, in addition to the presence of Grupo Solar, manufacturer of the Coca-Cola Brasil System in the State . According to the company, its presence in the State generates more than 14,000 jobs and income in the capital and in the countryside, in addition to that, 100% of the guarana used in drinks based on the Guaraná fruit (such as Fanta Guaraná, Guaraná Kuat, Tuchaua) comes from Amazon.

One of the company’s main programs in the state is Olhos da Floresta, created in 2016 in partnership with the Institute of Forestry and Agricultural Management and Certification (Imaflora), which offers technical support for the adoption of agroecological practices, such as social inclusion, income generation and rational use of natural resources. With this initiative, Coca-Cola Brasil is present in 90% of the guaraná production areas in the Amazonian territory, which comprises 18 municipalities and 124 communities, involving more than 350 producer families and benefits more than 3 thousand people in the production chain.

Among the company’s main partnerships with the State Government are: official sponsorship, for 27 years, of the Parintins Folk Festival; initiatives such as the Recicla, Galera action, which mobilizes the bumbás to properly dispose of the waste generated during the event; public-private partnership by offering 600 meals/day to the downtown unit of the popular restaurant Prato Cheio, which offers a meal for R$1, among others.
