Tereza Cristina says that PP will not enter the base, but may have names in the government

Senator Tereza Cristina (MS), leader of the PP in the Senate, reinforced the statement of the party’s national president, Ciro Nogueira, that the party will not be part of the government’s base, but that it will not bar any member who receives an invitation. of the articulation of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

The declaration comes at a time when the Lula government is seeking to broaden its base in Congress in order to be able to approve priority projects. Last week, the president said that he would meet with party leaders after the recess, in August, to present what the government could offer to the parties.

According to the senator, the PP may have “someone nominated by A or B, but it is a name, it does not mean that the party will go to government”, she said in an interview with the newspaper O Globo published this Monday (17).

Despite reaffirming that the party will not be part of the governing base, Tereza Cristina says that this does not mean that the PP will be the opposition in everything that is presented to Congress. She says that the caption makes a “responsible opposition” and that “it does not close the question”, which is when there is a unified orientation in favor or against a certain agenda.

“It’s not just because it’s the opposition that you have to vote against everything. Speaking of my case, I never received an orientation: ‘Vote for or against this’. The PP forwards yes, but we have the freedom to make our decisions, ”he said.

Tereza Cristina also sees that it is still too early to talk about right-wing names for the 2026 presidential succession, and that names may yet emerge in addition to those being mentioned, such as Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicanos-SP), Romeu Zema (Novo-MG ), Mouse Jr. (PSD-PR) and the president of the PP, Ciro Nogueira.

What he needs right now, he says, is for the right wing to stay united for the next presidential election.

“Our field just cannot be divided, we have to be together, PP, PL, Republicans and others. If we are united, we will find the best candidate for president and vice president, pragmatically, to win the elections”, he said.

Still according to the senator, it is too soon to say that Bolsonaro will be ineligible until 2026. “Lula was ineligible two and a half years ago. I say again, it’s too soon. Today we are doing the speculation, but the policy is dynamic ”, she added.
