Ten acts that marked Coritiba’s seventh relegation

With three rounds remaining before the end of the Brasileirão, Coritiba is relegated to Série B for the seventh time in history. With the defeat to Fluminense2-1, this Saturday (25), at Maracanã, the alviverde team will play the last games of the championship just to fulfill the schedule.

With one of the worst campaigns in history, Coxa spent the entire championship in the relegation zone and reached historic records for defeats and games without winning. All this in the year of the club’s biggest investment and the sale of SAF to Treecorp Investmentsa group that promises to invest R$ 1.3 billion at the club in ten years.

The negative numbers reflect the club’s poor planning for the season and the stumbles since the beginning of the year were the harbinger of the end of Coritiba’s year.

O OneTwo Sports brings ten moments that mark the chronology of the seventh relegation in Coxa’s history.

11/03: Elimination in Paranaense

Coritiba was eliminated by Cascavel in Paranaense

On March 11, Coritiba drew with Cascavel, at Couto Pereira, in the second leg of the round of 16 of the Paranaense Championship and was eliminated from the competition. Champion in 2022, early disqualification this year almost cost them participation in next year’s Copa do Brasil, but a combination of results between the other teams in the championship made it possible to qualify.

During the game, the fans protested against coach Antônio Oliveira and the squad and shouted “shame”. With the end of the State campaign, the Portuguese coach and the squad traveled to Atibaia for an interseason for the third phase of the Copa do Brasil, against Sport, and the start of the Brasileirão.

04/16: Flamengo 3×1 Coritiba and António Oliveira falls

In their debut in the Brasileirão, Coritiba lost to Flamengo, 3-0, at Maracanã. The defeat came after a bad result in the first game of the third phase of the Copa do Brasil, a 3-3 draw at Couto Pereira, which complicated Alviverde’s life in the competition.

After the negative debut in the championship, coach António Oliveira was fired in one of the club’s management planning failures. The coach was the one who studied and chose the signings at the beginning of the season and had just returned from the interseason in Atibaia, a period that became useless with the dismissal of the Portuguese.

04/27: Zago’s debut and elimination in the Copa do Brasil

António Oliveira’s successor was Antônio Carlos Zago. The coach, now coach of the Bolivian national team, debuted with elimination from the Copa do Brasil, after losing to Sport 2-0, on Ilha do Retiro.

In his first game in charge, Zago showed that practically nothing that Oliveira planned at the beginning of the year would be used. The coach changed the team’s tactical scheme and started using three defenders in a less defensive and more scoring team. A strategy that had no effect, as the team did not win any of the 11 matches it played under Zago’s command.

25/06: Grêmio 5×1 Coritiba and Zago’s bombastic press conference

Massacred by Grêmio, 5-1, in Porto Alegre, Coritiba reached the 18th match in a row without winning, the longest streak in the club’s history. In the press conference after the game, Zago blasted his own team in a controversial speech.

“I’ve already said it to my face, I say it every day. It’s the fault of whoever built this group. The players are here because they signed them. And whoever hired them is also to blame. Whoever set up this group is the biggest culprit. If you hired the wrong one, you have to take the blame. The coach always ends up paying the price. After the third round, against Bahia, I said ‘if it continues like this, we will fall to the second division’. Today is no different“, shot.

The speech caused the coach’s dismissal two days later.

4/07: Kosloski debut and attempted reaction

Thiago Kosloski debuted as a caretaker in Coritiba’s victory against Goiás, away from home. The score ended the longest fast in history and was the first time that Coxa won in the Brasileirão.

The sequence of good results, with three wins and a draw, made the board hire Kosloski. Still, what seemed to be a reaction stopped there, and, after becoming an effective coach, Alviverde was defeated again.

07/30: Botafogo 4×1 Coritiba and a terrible sequence

In the first game played, Kosloski had his first defeat. At Nilton Santos, Botafogo thrashed Coritiba 4-1. The result began a sequence of eight consecutive defeats, the worst in the history of the white-and-white team.

After Glorioso, Alviverde lost to Bragantino (1×0), Corinthians (3×1), Flamengo (3×2), Fortaleza (3×1), Bahia (4×2), Vasco (5×1) and São Paulo (2×1).

14/09: Coritiba 2×4 Bahia and Luan Polli’s failures

Against Bahia, Coritiba had one of the worst games of the entire competition. The home team opened the scoring, but goalkeeper Luan Polli, who replaced Gabriel, missed all of Bahia’s goals and handed the victory to Tricolor.

Polli was booed by the white-and-white fans when he first failed, but then the fans began to ironically applaud the goalkeeper. Before the end of the game, Couto began to be emptied.

11/11: Coritiba 1×0 Cruzeiro and invasion

In the match for the 34th round, which took place in Vila Capanema, due to the show by the band Red Hot Chilli Peppers, at Couto Pereira, Coritiba beat Cruzeiro 1-0, but Robson’s goal started an invasion of the pitch and fight between the two fans. The fans only dispersed when the Military Police entered the field.

Due to the confusion, the STJD banned Coxa and Cruzeiro fans from entering the stadium for the rest of the championship. The two clubs can still be punished with the loss of up to 20 field goals. The trial will be on Monday (27).

11/25: Fluminense 2×1 Coritiba and the seventh fall

At Maracanã, where Coritiba lifted the Brazilian championship cup in 1985, the 2-1 defeat to Fluminense was the last act that decreed the team’s relegation, three rounds in advance.

Strikers Germán Cano and John Kennedy scored the goal that resulted in Alviverde’s seventh defeat. At the end of the second half, striker Jesé Rodríguez, one of Coxa’s worst signings of the year, scored his first goal with the alviverde shirt.

The goal, however, did not change the result and now, Coritiba leads the ranking of most relegated to the second division in history, alongside América-MG.
