Former president Michel Temer (MDB) countered the speech of the current president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), who called him a coup plotter in a speech at the City Hall of Montevideo, the Uruguayan capital, this Wednesday (25).
Temer said, in a note released on his social networks, that the PT insists on remaining on the podium and tries to “rewrite history through ideological narratives”. The center of the current president’s criticism is the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff, in 2016, which he called a coup.
“Contrary to what he said today at an international event, the country was not the victim of any coup. In fact, the penalty provided for those who violate the Constitution was applied,” said the former president, who arrived at the Planalto Palace after the impeachment.
In addition, the emedebist said he had destroyed unemployment, interest rates and inflation, through measures such as labor reform and the State-owned Law, and stated that “with our arrival in government, Brazil did not suffer an institutional blow , was a ‘victim’ of a stroke of luck”.
“I recommend that President Lula govern looking forward, defending the truth, practicing harmony and preaching peace”, concluded the former president.
Lula’s speech in Montevideo took place in the wake of the trips made by the president since Monday (23), around a pro-regional integration signal, a paradigm overlooked by his predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro (PL), and in favor of Mercosur, economic bloc in the region.
The petista went to the city hall to receive the Mais Verde award from mayor Carolina Cosse, from the broad left front, and spoke to supporters, who shouted “no amnesty”, in reference to Bolsonaro and his allies.
Temer, on the other hand, rebutted the current president before about the process that raised him to the Presidency — on the eve of the second round, he repeated the idea that Brazil had gone through a stroke of luck when Lula stated, in debate, that Bolsonaro had received the leadership of the Executive of a scammer.
At the time, the former president said he regretted the “inelegance” of the PT and stressed that Dilma was overthrown by the people and by the National Congress. “Actually, what happened in Brazil was a ‘lucky break’, as we recovered the country from the biggest recession in its history”, he said in a post on Twitter.
