The governor of SP ruled out replacing the Secretary of Education, who is at the center of a controversy after refusing ten million textbooks

Sao Paulo-SP) – The governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), ruled out replacing the secretary of Education, Renato Feder, who is at the center of a controversy after refusing ten million textbooks that would be delivered by the Ministry of Education and saying that, from From now on, students will copy slides designed by teachers in the classroom.

O Estadão revealed this Friday that Feder is investigated for conflict of interest because his company sells notebooks to the secretariat he commands. He owns part of Multilaser, which maintains contracts with the Department of Education for more than R$75 million. In all, there are three contracts for the supply of 97 thousand notebooks for the state public network.

In conversation with Estadão, Tarcísio classified the secretary of “extremely prepared, studious, enthusiastic and idealistic”. And he added that Feder “has your admiration and respect” is that “the chance” to be replaced is “zero”.

The governor defended the secretary’s position on textbooks. “It is not an unreasonable decision. It was just miscommunicated. She makes a lot of sense. There’s a logic that they didn’t know how to explain”, he said. And he anticipated that students will have a textbook printed with the material from the in-depth slides.

“We are going to print centrally and distribute this material to schools. So, the student will have the tablet and the printed material available. It goes to the taste of the customer”, said the governor. For the textbook, the government of São Paulo would not pay anything, since it is bought and delivered by the Ministry of Education (MEC). The State Public Ministry has opened an inquiry to investigate the cost and quality of the material that the Tarcísio government wants to use.

Today in state schools there are still no tablets, according to the secretary told Estadão, classes have “a big TV, which shows Power Point slides, students with paper and pen, taking notes and doing exercises”.

Regarding the secretary’s company contracts with the portfolio he commands, the governor said that the government of São Paulo “already bought Multilaser before his administration and his government did not buy anything from the company”.

digital class diary

Since April, the government of São Paulo has been recommending that teachers use the digital class diary, which contains lessons for all subjects, organized into around 20 slides. The teacher opens the class on his cell phone or computer and projects it on the classroom TV.

In justifying the measure, the secretary questioned the quality of the books of the National Textbook Program (PNLD), which for decades has been distributed to all states by the MEC in an effort to standardize the school curriculum. In the evaluation of the state government, the content of the works that will be distributed by the ministry of the Lula government is “more shallow, more superficial”.

When contacted, Feder did not comment on the investigations involving his company’s contract with the secretariat.
