Tarcísio announces that São Paulo will have a Military Police college

The governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), announced this month the creation of a school aimed at children of military police officers. The educational institution will be located within the Barro Branco Military Police Academy. Officially, details about the proposal have not yet been released, but the report from People’s Gazette found out what the model should look like.

The São Paulo Military Police school will serve students from Elementary School II and High School, with the launch of one class at a time, starting next year. The project must be designed jointly by the Public Security and Education departments.

The space where the school should be located within the Barro Branco Military Police Academy is separate, but work will be needed before it can start receiving students. Students will have a military uniform and a military haircut.

The classes will be taught, for the most part, by military teachers and some subjects by civilian teachers. Students will have to sing the national and flag anthems, in addition to taking classes on civic concepts, ethics and some subjects that are not included in the regular schedule of other schools in the state network.

There will be a kind of “entrance exam” among the children of military personnel to enter school. There will also be a quota, for which a percentage will still be defined, intended for the admission of students who are not children of military personnel.

In São Paulo there are some Military Police and Cruz Azul schools, but they belong to the private sector and, for the most part, only use the name of the corporation. This new model announced by the governor of São Paulo is not the same as the civic-military schools, promised for 2025 in the state. On March 7, when announcing the civic-military schools project, the governor mentioned the school aimed at children of members of the Military Police. “We don’t want to stay just at the civic-military school, we also have a project to create the Military Police College in São Paulo,” stated Tarcísio.

Rapporteur for civic-military schools defends Military Police college in São Paulo

The state representative lieutenant Coimbra (PL), who will be the rapporteur of the Complete Bill 9/2024 on civic-military schools in the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo (Alesp), is betting on the dispute for places in the military school at the Academia do Barro Branco. “It is a more restrictive model aimed at the military family, but there is the possibility of more than one according to the police’s own studies and the number of police officers”.

Coimbra points out that the discipline of school units with a military structure produces results. “The discipline that will exist within the school will favor the teachers who are there to teach to their fullest. The student absorbs the class better. The military schools themselves with this format provide excellence in entrance exams, international competitions and academic Olympics”, he argues.
