Surfer from Rio de Janeiro, João Chianca, also known as Chumbinho, secured Brazil’s second spot at the 2024 Paris Olympics – the other had already been conquered by Filipe Toledo from São Paulo and also qualified for the WSL Finals, the 2023 World League title decision of Surf. The definition of both vacancies took place on Wednesday night (16) with the end of the regular stage of Teahupo’o (Tahiti), the last of the world surfing circuit. Despite having fallen in the play-offs in the Tahiti stage, the surfer scored enough points to continue in the fight for the 2023 title at the WSL Finals and even won the Olympic spot.

“I am really happy. It was a year of many new things for me, I’m experiencing everything for the first time and fighting for the Olympic spot was something that hadn’t crossed my mind in the last four years. Everything happens at the right time. The Olympic Games in Teahupo´o are going to be a huge moment for surfing. It’s an amazing opportunity in our lifetimes, but there’s still work to be done. The Olympic vacancy was decided fairly, because everyone had the same opportunities throughout the year. Very happy to see everyone’s evolution and my own evolution”said Chumbinho, 22 years old, in a statement to the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB).

At the end of the 10 regular stages of the circuit, Chumbinho was fourth in the world ranking, with 43,950 points. Compatriot Filipinho leads the list with 58,300. Only the top five will compete for the 2023 world title. The North American Griffin Colapinto (2nd), and the Australians Ethan Ewing (3rd) and Jack Robinson (5th) complete the select group of finalists.

Gabriel Medina also dreamed of advancing to both competitions, but he needed to win the stage in Tahiti, which did not happen. The three-time world champion reached the final, but was beaten by Australian Jack Robinson, who won the title in Teahupo’o.

In sixth place in the world ranking, Medina is out of the WSL Finals, which brings together only the five best placed in the season. However, he can continue dreaming of Paris if he wins the ISA Games – World Surfing Association International – Puerto Rico, in February next year. Brazil can win an extra men’s spot at the Paris Games if it is team champion at the ISA Games. In the female category, Tatiana Weston-Webb already has a guaranteed presence at the Olympics. There is still the possibility of two other vacancies: one for the ISA Games and another in case of Brazil’s gold medal at the Pan American Games in Santiago (Chile).

The WSL Finals is scheduled for the period from September 8th to 16th, at Lower Trestles beach, in the Californian city of San Clemente (United States).
