Students say Janaina Paschoal ‘isn’t welcome’ at USP – 02/06/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

The return of São Paulo State Deputy Janaina Paschoal (PRTB) to the Faculty of Law at USP, in the city of São Paulo, caused a stir among students at the institution. Members of the XI de Agosto Academic Center are already preparing a petition in which they oppose the return of the teacher to the classroom.

As the column showed, Janaina showed interest in resuming classes at Largo de São Francisco shortly after the 2022 elections, when she was not elected to the Senate. Graduated from college since she arrived at the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo, in 2019, she will end her term on March 15.

“You don’t fit in here anymore. Our classrooms have become too big for you”, says a note prepared by the Academic Center XI de Agosto and obtained by the column.

In the document, the students also claim that they received the news “with disturbance”, classify the parliamentarian as an “enlightened Bolsonarist” and question the fact that she did not adhere to the letter in defense of democracy articulated and read at the Faculty of Law during the process election of 2022.

Janaina’s participation as the author of the impeachment request of Dilma Rousseff (PT) is also criticized.

“Since becoming one of the leaders and the main legal guarantor of the extreme right, Janaína has abandoned the democratic values ​​that should permeate the classrooms of the main institution of legal education in the country”, says the text.

“In the four dark years that the country faced under the government of [Jair] Bolsonaro, Janaína presented herself as a kind of enlightened Bolsonarist. However, her alleged disagreements with far-right movements are minimal and we consider there to be as much blood on her hands as on theirs,” she continues.

Janaina Paschoal proposed to the institution to teach disciplines on public security, religious conflicts or bioethics, but they had already been distributed among other professors. The deputy is now waiting for a response from the faculty on which class she can take.

“The return of Janaína Paschoal to teaching activities at the Faculty of Law of USP is news received with disturbance by the student body of Largo de São Francisco and by the Academic Center XI de Agosto.

Since becoming one of the leaders and main legal guarantor of the extreme right, Janaína has abandoned the democratic values ​​that should permeate the classrooms of the country’s main legal education institution.

A notorious example of this deviation is being one of the few professors who did not sign the ‘Letter to Brazilian women and men in defense of the Democratic State of Law’, a historic document written by the Faculty of Law, which brought together Brazil in defense of democracy.

We believe that Janaína Paschoal has made an indecent contribution to the country. She was responsible for legally substantiating the impeachment process against former President Dilma Rousseff and, in 2018, she supported and surfed the Bolsonarist wave to reach a mandate in the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo.

In the four dark years that the country faced under the Bolsonaro government, Janaína presented herself as a kind of enlightened Bolsonarist. However, his alleged disagreements with extreme right movements are minimal and we consider that there is as much blood on his hands as on theirs.

Fortunately, the population of São Paulo denied her a seat in the Senate. On the other hand, her defeat in politics makes a return to the arcades possible. That’s why, before she sets foot in the Free Territory of Largo de San Francisco again, we want you to know that she is no longer welcome.

Today, the Faculty of Law at USP belongs to black and poor students. Today the university belongs to the defenders of democracy, not its detractors. That’s exactly why you don’t fit here anymore. Our classrooms have become too big for you.”
