In order to help elderly people maintain their privacy while bathing, the group of students developed the project, which emits an audible alert when it detects a fall inside the bathroom stall. Students from the interior of SP create a device that detects falls in bathrooms Care for the health and well-being of elderly people is a constant concern for family members. The same happens with a student from the interior of São Paulo, who was inspired by his own grandmother for a project on his technical course in electronics, and created a device to detect falls in bathrooms. Diogo Correia, who graduated from the Trajano Camargo State Technical School (Etec), in Limeira (SP), developed the project with the aim of preserving his grandmother’s privacy, but with her well-being in mind. The device created is capable of identifying when a person falls into the bathroom stall and emits a sound so that another person can help. Together with classmates Davi Bugyi Sarmento and Gabriel Zaros Muterle, and the guidance of coordinator and professor Carlos Alberto Serpeloni, the project began to be developed at the beginning of 2023 as the final work to conclude the course. 📲 Receive news from the Piracicaba region on WhatsApp The device works in a simple way: They are sensors that are on the walls of the shower and detect when the person falls and remains on the bathroom floor for more than 30 seconds, emitting a loud audible alert so that someone can come in and help – watch the prototype video above. 👆 g1 interviewed those responsible for the project to understand more about the operation and process. Check it out below.👇 Device created by students at an Etec in Limeira helps detect falls in bathrooms Beatriz Bisan/g1 Piracicaba Motivation behind the project Diogo explains that, at the time he started developing the project, his grandmother was going through a phase who needed constant care, such as help with bathing. But this made the elderly woman uncomfortable, making her feel that her privacy was being invaded by having someone with her in the bathroom. “I was thinking of a way to detect her falling in the bath, but without someone needing to be in there with her, or without needing a security camera. There were a lot of cases of her falling in the bath”, says Diogo. With the idea defined and motivation in mind, the boy began to combine the desire for the project with the need to develop work to complete the course. He initially thought about making the prototype with light sensors, and from then on the idea began to be developed. Davi, professor Carlos and Diogo explain the operation of the fall detection device created at ETEC in Limeira Beatriz Bisan/g1 Piracicaba Development of the prototype After defining that the target of the project would be elderly people who need care but still want to maintain their privacy, the Boys started to work with the teacher during classes to develop a prototype as best as possible that met expectations. “The student comes and brings a problem, and we help solve this problem through the course method. The way we solved it was this way, creating an electronic device that will detect when the person falls into the bathroom stall and issue a warning sound”, explains professor Carlos about how the idea for a work arises. The boys say that the raw material used to form the prototype was basic: some acrylic plates, a crochet doll to simulate the elderly made by Diogo’s aunt, a phenolite plate and some sensors. “We combined our knowledge from three years of coursework and using the school materials we were able to develop this project”, highlights Diogo. Prototype developed by students in Limeira was for the course completion project at Etec Beatriz Bisan/g1 Piracicaba In total, for the entire work process, it took less than 12 months between the idealization of the project, its development and finally, completion and exhibition of the prototype. Difference in the market When talking about what makes the project he developed different from others that already exist, Diogo points out the lack of products that do not depend on the collaboration of the elderly to function. He says that while researching, he found several devices used to detect falls, but which are not installed in the bathroom, they are accessories such as cords and watches. As they are easy to handle items, existing detectors can be removed by the elderly, who may choose not to use the devices. There is also the issue of the battery, which in these accessories can run out and always need to be recharged. Diogo explains these points and highlights how his group’s project can be more effective, not requiring the use of the elderly, nor a battery, and cannot be easily removed or turned off, as the device would be installed directly inside the bathroom, making it more reliable. Highlight of the project After the development of the prototype was successful, it was time to let the project shine and expand its paths. The group and its detector were selected as finalists at the 11th Science and Technology Exhibition of the 3M Institute, a fair that annually brings together 100 works that were highlighted during the year. Group responsible for developing the fall detector in Limeira was selected for the science and technology highlights fair Disclosure “First, pre-research is carried out to assess whether the product is viable. If so, we participate in our internal school fair and We end up registering the best projects at fairs in the region. Then the student signs up and if called, they participate”, explained Professor Carlos. Students comment that participating in the fair was important so that they could understand more about the project, analyze its qualities, defects and find out what could be improved and better designed. Towards the market Diogo defines the main and biggest objective at the moment: patenting the project and avoiding any legal problems in relation to it. Then, he points out the full-size development of the detector, in bathrooms, as so far they have worked with the reduced-size prototype. Working on the full-size prototype is an important step, as the group intends to commercialize the product in the not too distant future. According to them, the objective is for it to be sold in an accessible and cheap way so that it can help and make life easier for elderly people who need it. ***Under the supervision of Caroline Giantomaso VIDEOS: Everything about Piracicaba and the region See more news from the region on g1 Piracicaba
