Student from Amapá wins place in the Brazilian Taekwondo Team and will compete in Mexico – News of Brazil

With support from the Government of Amapá, the Antônio Messias State School student, Anna Elizabeth Portugal, aged 13, will represent Brazil in the Pan-American Taekwondo Championship, taking place in Mexico, in June 2024.
The teenager won the opportunity in March, during the sport’s Grand Slam, in Rio de Janeiro, which guaranteed the athlete a place on the Brazilian Taekwondo Team. To reach space, Anna needed to win ten fights in the Grand Slam, an event that brought together athletes from all over the country. Now, the girl hopes that the victory will inspire other people from Amapá to take up the sport.
“I started the sport when I was five years old, when my grandfather asked if I wanted to do taekwondo or ballet. I didn’t know the martial art, so I asked him to introduce me. Since then, I have been training, managing to achieve several goals with a lot of effort”says the young athlete.
Study and sport routine
Anna spends her mornings at Escola Antônio Messias, in the South Zone of Macapá, before resting in the afternoon and training all night. The young woman says that balancing studies with sport is not easy, but that the discipline of martial art also helps her focus.
“Taekwondo for me is very important and helps me rest. It also helps my discipline at home and at school. What stands out most about sport is that the fans believe in me, so I also start to believe that I can win a medal.”explains Anna.
Trajectory
Even at her young age, Anna already has a history of achievements in the sport. “The Grand Slam was incredible. The fights were very difficult, but I managed to gain a lot of experience and knowledge, not only by practicing but also by watching others. I feel very grateful to represent Amapá for all of Brazil. There is a great responsibility, but the happiness is even greater”says the athlete.
While the trip to Mexico doesn’t arrive, Anna continues training and studying, in an example of how participation in sports can also be an educational incentive. “I hope to inspire many girls to try and continue in Brazilian sport. For me, sport is health, happiness and passion”, concludes Anna.
