STJD confirms punishment to Corinthians for homophobic chants

The STJD denied the appeal of the Corinthians to try to reverse the punishment for homophobic chants applied to the club in June and maintained the decision that imposed the holding of a home game behind closed doors in the Brasileirão.

Initially, the sanction would be fulfilled in the duel against Red Bull Bragantino, on July 2, but the Corinthians got a suspensive effect. Even with the presence of the crowd against the team from the interior, the team from São Paulo was defeated by 1 to 0.

With the determination confirmed, the penalty will be served against Vasco, with a date yet to be defined, but scheduled for the weekend of July 29, in a game valid for the 18th round of the Brazilian Championship, competition in which the infraction was committed. The homophobic chants were heard during the derby with São Paulo played in May, at the Corinthian stadium, for the sixth round.

On May 14, referee Bruno Arleu de Araújo paralyzed Corinthians x São Paulo in the 17th minute of the second half after the crowd sang a song that referred to São Paulo as “faggots”. There were only fans of the home team in the stadium.

“The club was unable to identify any supporters in a modern stadium with all the possibilities for that. There is no point in advertising and marketing against homophobia on the big screen for 45,000 people if people do not respect it,” said attorney Rafael Bozzano.

Corinthians’ next home game in the league was to be on July 15, against Grêmio, but the match was postponed. The date will be used for the return game of the quarterfinals of the Copa do Brasil, against América-MG, after necessary adjustments due to the participation of the alvinegro team in the Sul-Americana, in a duel with Universitario, from Peru, in the next Wednesday, the 12th, when the game against the Minas Gerais team was initially scheduled.

Due to the chants against São Paulo, Corinthians was framed in article 243-G of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice (CBJD), which deals with “practicing a discriminatory, disdainful or outrageous act, related to prejudice due to ethnic origin, race , sex, color, age, condition of an elderly or disabled person”.

The club was even at risk of losing points in the Brasileirão, as determined by the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice (CBJD) in cases of discrimination practiced by a large number of people linked to the same sports entity. The loss of points is also provided for in the General Regulation of Competitions (RGC) of the CBF, which has promised more severe sanctions in cases of discrimination in football.
