The player suffered racist attacks from Valencia fans
(Rio de Janeiro)- The government of the State of Rio de Janeiro sanctioned this Wednesday (5) an anti-racism law that bears the name of striker Vinícius Junior, aiming to interrupt or suspend sporting events in case of racist conduct.
The Real Madrid player suffered racist attacks from Valencia fans in La Liga in May, the 10th incident involving the 22-year-old striker that the league reported to prosecutors last season.
The law was inspired by Vinícius Junior’s response to the incident at the Mestalla stadium in Valencia, when play was stopped for several minutes while the athlete pointed at those attacking him in the stands.
The “Law Vini Jr.”, unanimously approved by the State Legislative Assembly in June, includes a protocol on how to process complaints of racism and mandatory educational campaigns.
“It’s a very special day, because I’m very young and I didn’t expect this so young”, said Vinícius during a ceremony held at Maracanã, where he debuted for Flamengo’s main team in 2017.
Vinícius Junior also received awards from the Legislative Assembly and the City Council of Rio de Janeiro and set foot on the Walk of Fame at Maracanã, where he is now alongside big names such as Pelé, Garrincha and Ronaldo.
“Sometimes I wonder if I deserve so much”
said the attacker.
“I didn’t expect to debut at Maracanã and be able to receive all these awards”.
